Whenever an author, a filmmaker, or some other creative person takes on the challenge of extending a beloved, established franchise, many fans inspect the new work closely to ensure that it is "canonical." Others decry these efforts, saying that the original is not always perfect, or that the new works are excellent despite the differences. I feel strongly about canon in the sci-fi and fantasy worlds that I love and revisit on a regular basis (such as Dune). For things that I pay a bit less attention to (say, Predator), I don't care one way or the other. What about you?
