This week's Geekend-approved item of apparel is the Toaster Shirt from Glarkware.
This, my friends, is a prime example of a "stealth geek" shirt. To the untrained eye, it appears that the wearer is merely declaring a love for toast and/or retro-futuristic pop art. (There's a pop tart pun in there somewhere.)
To the enlightened connoisseur of science fiction television, however, this is a gleeful reference to the new Battlestar Galactica series, wherein the cybernetic Cylons are referred to derisively as "toasters." Note how much the toaster in question looks like both a classic and reimagined Cylon centurion. That, kiddies, is how you illustrate a pun.
Jay Garmon has a vast and terrifying knowledge of all things obscure, obtuse, and irrelevant. One day, he hopes to write science fiction, but for now he'll settle for something stranger — amusing and abusing IT pros. Read his full profile. You can also follow him on his personal blog.
