A rumor is circulating that Microsoft is launching the Zune 2. Two major variants are planned: a flash-based 4/8 GB and the HDD-based 80 GB with Wi-Fi and screen technology as in the earlier Zune.
The Zune players are being launched ahead of their scheduled date of October 16th, reports SlashGear. Perhaps the advancement is in hopes of cashing in on the goodwill of the success of Halo 3 (Pocket-lint).
A quote from the article at BetaNews:
Entering the flash-based device market is very important for Microsoft, as the category is by far the most popular. While the Zune has managed to grab a 10 percent share of the HDD player segment, overall that has amounted to about a 3 percent share of the market in general.
While the Zune hasn't provided any serious competition to the immensely popular Apple iPod, it's another product for Microsoft to make its mark in history.
