Who's it for?
Any iPad user - enthusiasts, C-level executives, traveling staff, corporate IT employees and technology consultants included - will find LogMeIn Ignition an invaluable iPad application. In fact, LogMeIn Ignition for the iPad is potentially a killer app for the iPad, as the application enables connecting not only to remote Windows desktops but servers and Mac machines as well as systems with Adobe Flash.
What problem does it solve?
LogMeIn Ignition for the iPad makes it easy for mobile users to securely connect to remote desktops and servers. Ignition's intuitive interface makes it easy to remotely connect to and control LogMeIn-equipped systems as if sitting in front of the remote system. That means iPad users can use their iPads to remotely administer Windows servers, access files on Windows desktops, send email from remote Mac systems, quickly access Web-based Adobe Web sites on remote machines and more.
- Intuitive, easy to use: The first thing users will notice about LogMeIn Ignition is its intuitive, easy-to-use interface. The remote control application leverages the same iPad finger motions for zooming in and zooming out and performing other actions. Because the iPad display is smaller than traditional workstations, the touch screen often requires precise input. But Ignition doesn't require users to place a fingertip within an absolute location to select a minimize icon, for example. Instead the screen cursor on the remote system is controlled by moving one's finger across the iPad display, with the entire iPad screen serving as the trackpad for inputting single and double taps. It's very easy to begin controlling remote systems with little to no practice, as a result. Further, unlike many RDP programs, Ignition and LogMeIn don't require any firewall port adjustments.
- Server support: Using LogMeIn Ignition, subscribers can access any remote systems running LogMeIn Free or LogMeIn Pro, whether those systems are Macintosh machines, Windows clients or any of a variety of Windows server platforms. As long as users know the LogMeIn credentials associated with the respective remote system, and the system's log in information, they're good to go. Remotely adding and disabling users within server management consoles is no trouble. Restarting critical Exchange servers is simple. Confirming free disk space, downloading updates and checking backup operations is a breeze.
- Reliable: Various VNS-related remote access tools come and go. But LogMeIn has proved a rock solid mainstay for many technology departments. Consulting offices have come to depend upon LogMeIn Rescue to assist clients, and LogMeIn Ignition continues building upon the proven LogMeIn infrastructure and platform. It works and it works well. Repeatedly it's proven to be the most effective method of performing fast tasks (disabling user accounts, restarting server services, etc.) quickly. In fact, using LogMeIn Ignition on my iPad, I've been able to start my iPad, log in to a remote server, perform an emergency action, confirm the repair is complete and log off even before my laptop would have booted its OS to begin those same repair operations. And, I've never lost a single session. That's as reliable as reliable gets.
- iPad limitations still apply: While LogMeIn Ignition for iPad works reliably and provides an excellent method for connecting remotely to LogMeIn-equipped systems, typical iPad limitations still apply. The iPad's smaller screen resolution may require that Ignition users zoom in on some screens to ensure they're legibile. Further, mastering the iPad's pinch and scroll motions, as well as single-click and double-click nuances, still apply if the user is to maximize Ignition's capabilities.

Bottom line for business
Reliable, secure and easy-to-use remote control applications are becoming a requirement for any modern-day road warrior. As portable devices increasingly become the norm, connecting back to mothership systems or remotely accessing critical servers is going to prove commonplace. It's good to know LogMeIn, with its Ignition application, already has a proven solution in place.
