SonicWALL's TZ 100 Internet Security Appliance sells for $295, list price. The devices offers optional unified threat management (UTM), with subscriptions available for combating viruses, spyware, intrusions, spam and more. A wireless model is also available.

The SonicWALL TZ 100 includes an integrated four-port 10/100 switch. Other ports are available for WAN and console connectivity.

The SonicWALL TZ 100 includes power, diagnostic mode and port status LEDs. The unit's design is simple and straightforward, with few flare or design touches. Don't let the plastic casing fool you, though. The TZ 100's value comes from the powerful router and firewall functionality packed inside.

TZ 100 System Status Display

The TZ 100's System Status window, shown here, displays critical information about the security appliance's configuration. In addition to listing the firmware and ROM versions and SSL node use, the screen lists real-time CPU use.

TZ 100 Interface Window

The SonicWALL Enhanced OS Network Interfaces window lists the zones, IP addresses, accompanying subnet masks and more for each port with an active network connection.

Firewall Access Rules

To modify Firewall Access Rules, such as is required when wanting to open custom ports, administrators can use built in wizards or modify access rules manually by clicking the appropriate arrow within this window. For example, administrators needing to confirm or modify specific firewall port settings can click the WAN->LAN arrow to review those settings.

Security Services

Administrators manage the TZ 100's subscription services using the router's Security Services console. Here you can see the Manage/Synchronize Licenses window, which technicians can use to reduce antivirus traffic over ISDN connections and more.

SonicWALL Enhanced OS Logging

The enhanced SonicWALL OS provides complete logging and reporting functionality. Within the Log console, administrators can review events logged to the SonicWALL's log files.
