Last week's Question of the Week, submitted by Hal 9000: "Now that all but one of the charges against Terry Childs has been dismissed, how has this case affected the way you think about network security and what you do in your daily work?" Here are a couple responses from the TR community:
This week’s Question of the Week was sent in by TR member jck: “What mainstream technology are you itching to try, and what has kept you from trying it?" Please send your answers to trol at techrepublic.com. We also received a "Who is this TR member?" photo. Take a look at the baby picture in the video, and then send your guess to trol at techrepublic.com. jdclyde: "The word for the day is “CYA. Make sure you keep records of communications with your boss and co-workers for anything that could even remotely be criticized or questioned later on.”
datacommguy: “I don't know that it has -- or would have -- affected me. I can see both sides, and it reminds me of the many times that dastardly documentation I needed to update got delayed by some perceived 'crisis' or constantly shifting 'priority' project. But in the real world, the necessary documentation and procedures often get totally out of date. And when I left my last full-time job due to a directive from on high to cut costs (with specific names directly from HR's salary list), they had some real problems with several critical (their words) systems which no longer had any experienced support after dumping the primary sysadmin, his backup, and the assigned business analyst. From what I've heard, it may have saved them quite a bit of money in the long term but will almost certainly take a bit longer than they'd planned if you factor in the cost of the outside consultants they've been forced to bring in. Sorry for old friends still there who are now going to see their lack of ability to maintain that system reflected in their next review, but... can't say I've lost any sleep over it or suppressed that little smile when I hear about 'my' 5-nines system being down for days...”
We have lots and lots of swag. If you'd like a complete listing, shoot me an e-mail, and I'll send a reply.
