vCenter XVP Manager and Converter connects Hyper-V hosts to vSphere Client

The VMware Labs project has a number of great tools to provide sharp shooting to your vSphere environment or to allow you to reproduce conditions in a development situation. In previous TechRepublic posts, I mentioned that the PXE Manager and the ThinApp version of the vSphere Client tools from VMware Labs are good to keep handy. The new vCenter XVP Manager and Converter (XVP), which is used to manage Hyper-V Servers and Windows 2008 Servers and to perform conversions to vSphere tool, is another tool to add to your arsenal.

XVP makes a connection to an existing vCenter Server from another system. These are the only important options during the install of XVP (Figure A). Figure A

Once installed, a plug-in is sent to the vCenter Server. This plug-in can be downloaded on a system running the vSphere Client. This download step and then the navigation to the plug-in are shown in Figure B. Figure B

After the plug-ins are installed, the Add Host wizard can be run within this area of the vSphere Client. In my personal lab, I added a Hyper-V Server to the vSphere Client. Once this is completed, a number of basic administrative tasks to a host and virtual machine can be provided. This includes visibly representing CPU and memory usage, a virtual power button for a virtual machine, and the ability to modify the hardware inventory of a virtual machine. In my personal lab, once the Hyper-V Server was added to the inventory, the host and virtual machines were enumerated in the vSphere Client (Figure C). Figure C

It may be useful in a lab situation to have a Hyper-V Server enumerated in the vSphere Client. Practically speaking, the ongoing management of a production or semi-production Hyper-V host would be best suited for Hyper-V Manager or System Center Virtual Machine Manager. The conversion aspect of XVP allows a Hyper-V virtual machine to be moved over to the vSphere environment, though VMware Converter can do this task in most situations as well.
