what is the best setting (pixels) for the screen for a 15″ monitor

  800×600 with 16-bit color, although the palette is really whatever your adapter and monitor can handle well…

  EGA, CGA, VGA, or SVGA?
  
  It really depends on what the user prefers, for window, icon and font size. Personally I prefer 1024 X 768 with 16 bit. 800 X 600 is the middle of the road/standard setting.

  Recommended for monitors is as follows
  14″-15″ 800×600 16bit color
  17″ 1024×768 16bit colour
  19″-21″1280×1024 16bit color
  
  All should be at a min refresh rate of 85mhz.
  
  16bit is to maintain compatibility with games, as some games have problems changing from a different display depth.

  That depends on your preferences. Personally, I would prefer 1024 X 768 with high colour 16bit. This can also be changed to 800 X 600 if needed.

  The setting for the screen for monitors depend on:
  1. Refresh rate supported by this monitor. Recomended value of refresh rate for normal work is 85mhz (or higher).
  
  2. Color depth supported by video card. Today 16 bit value is minimal setting.
  If 800×600 or 1024×768 setting support this refresh rate and color depth, then choice determine by software, which will be used.

  The setting for the screen for monitors depend on:
  1. Refresh rate supported by this monitor.
  2. Color depth supported by video card.
  800×600 (16bit color is usually default)
  
  Setting this up, you need to know the Hz the monitor supports, you can find this out by looking on the back of the monitor (most 15″ are 50/60hz).
  
  Also you need to know what the video card supports, and this can vary.
  
  If you set resolution higher than the monitor supports, you can and will fry your monitor.
