40 GB HDD not sensed

By Sitangshu ·
I have a problem with Seagate 40 GB HDD ST340810A (U Series, Ultra ATA/100) not being sensed by my computer on AutoDetect with system BIOS freezing / locking up at Power On Self Test (POST). System configuration is Intel PIII 500 MHz CPU, Procomp B 687 motherboard with Award BIOS, Windows 98 SE). Detailed configuration details are as under :
Intel(r) Chipset Intel(r) PIIXn Device
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Intel(r) 440BX AGPset 82371AB/EB (PIIX4/PIIX4E)

Hard Disk Controller : Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller (bus master drivers are native to the operating system and not Intel Bus Master IDE Driver )
Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)

BIOS Date: 02/12/99
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS I 02/12/1999-i440BX-ALI513-2A69KPNDC-00
BIOS Eval: B687 BIOS Ver:1.2
Chipset: Intel 440BX/ZX rev 3
Superio: ALi M5133 rev 0 found at port 3F0h

Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A (Windows 98 Second Edition Q 2739** Update)
Grateful, if you could advise me on how to overcome this particular problem and install the 40 GB hard disk as a second HDD on my system (my current HDD is Seagate ST313032A - 7BQOKED3 -13 GB). Do I need a BIOS Upgrade ?

40 GB HDD not sensed

Unless the Bios update of 02/12/1999 upgraded it to ATA 100 complient, the motherboard is only capable of ATA 66. Have tried software to manage harddrive and to utilize > 2GB disk, found this can cause problems in proprietary systems that have their own software to control harddrive(s).

Currently have the same problem (40 GB HDD) and will upgrade motherboard/chipset to resolve the problem.

Good Luck!
