Active directory showing shares from removed domain controller

By Marty the Borg ·
I recently started work at a new company.
We have about 73 servers, and I became aware that a single win2000 server was the: file server, print server and sole domain controller.
I re-tasked 3 blades: one to be a print server, and established 2 domain controllers.
Then I demoted the win2000 server from everything but file-serving.

My next step was to start working on the GPO?s . I was unable to make any new ones work.

Troubleshooting reveled that there were a bazillion errors on the DC?s relating to not being able to find the SysVol.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event I 1058
Date: 10/12/2007
Time: 3:39:18 PM
Computer: PMRCDC2K301
Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO cn={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},cn=policies,cn=system,DC=mydomain,DC=org. The file must be present at the location <\\\sysvol\\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>. (The network name cannot be found. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

Further troubleshooting found that when I tried to ?whack? to \\\ (from either of the domain controllers) I was shown the shares from the original fileserver, and not Netlogon or Sysvol like I expect.
I was able to duplicate this from several of the other critical servers (exchange, etc.) but from most servers and workstations I would see what I expect (netlogon, sysvol etc.)

What did I miss?
