    Adding RAM-Problems

    Locked

    by holmesmc ·

Recently I added some RAM to two machines for a business in town, and the machines aren’t seeing the new sticks in slots two or three. They both are PII 400’s with similar motherboards but different BIOS on them. It’s not a compatibility issue because I swapped in the original sticks in one computer while trying the two new sticks in the other and both machines are only seeing the first slot. I also tryed slots 1&3 as well to no avail. What could be wrong with these two machines? They both havewin98 on them however this shouldn’t make a difference. Usually it’s “plug-n-go”. But this one has me and several others stumpted! HELP.

Is the ram the same and you are mixing two different types, read ad though the new sticks performed well togeather now that you have them in they are mixed.

From your description, it sound like you’re using incompatible ram.

Try something fully backed by CRUCIAL (no I don’t work for them) or another reliable memory vendor.

      Good luck.

The ram I’m using is from kingston and they do not work together. So it’s not a compatibility issue, it seems to be the slots are not working (2&3).

I would make sure the RAM is all the same speed (MHz). Matching PC66 with PC100 or whatever doesn’t always work. Another thing I would check out, look at the RAM slots on the motherboard real close, maybe with a magnifying glass, and see if any pinsare bent. You also might want to make sure there isn’t any dirt or dust in there. The motherboards RAM slots could be bad as well.

From what you said, you have tried the original two sticks in one machine right (the two old ones in the same box) and the two new one together also. Is there a setting in the bios like “reset config data” if so enable it and reboot. There may be other settings in the bios for detecting ram also.

The ram is all the same speed and in the bios, there were just settings for different ns…60, or 70. I tried all of the settings. I haven’t looked to see if there is a setting to clear the bios though. That is a good idea. Thanks guys.

Make sure theat they are the same kind of ram and the same size ram. Also if the motherboard allows for different kinds of ram (simms & DIMMS on the same board), if you have a full bank of one, it will cause some of the other to be ignored

There is only one bank of three slots for the ram. The two new sticks are the same kind. And the two old sticks are the same but from a different manufacturer than the new. It’s all PC100 and same speed. 60ns. Thanks for the ideas.

Is it possible that your are putting in more memory than the mobo’s will allow? You might try checking the mobo’s manufactures website for any bios updates or FAQ’s.
