AMIBIOS won't boot to floppy if it sees

By sublime1 ·
Pentium 233MMX, 64MB, 6GHD, new IDE cables, MB IDE. PC froze, not responding to anything. On reboot, it couldn't find boot record for C drive. AMI BIOS, don't have numbers now.
Sometimes will auto-detect HD, but numbers wrong. Sometimes acknowledges CD-ROM, but says not ATAPI compatible. Usually takes long time doing this. Other times, zips through detection process.

Bottom line: whether with HD #s it autodetects, or true figures, when it sees both HD and CD-ROM (could proceed with AV, FDISK, format, setup from WIN98 CD), it finishes boot process searching for boot record on HD, not finding, then searching for boot record on floppy drive, finding, and says "OK", starts to process floppy, printer initiates, & when WIN98 should start, hangs, with "_" in bottom left of screen! To boot from floppy, and activate CD-ROM, I put "not installed" in BIOS for HD, which means can't access to FDISK or format it! If BIOS acknowledges HD, it hangs at point where WIN98 should start from the floppy!

First to all you have to identify whats causing the problem:

Make sure you got the latest bios

Check your hd, install it sowhere else or try installing a different one on another pc

Check your pc hardware, fan first of all, battery, run diagnostics if your bios has got the utility

Get a bootable antivirus disk and check your memory for viruses

Good luck

Update your BIOS. Download it from the Internet from the manufacturer's web site or contact them to send you a BIOS update disk.

Got the same problem with some of the Compaq Deskpros. Updated BIOS fixed it!

You can try to use a different HD to install Win98. If it works then, most probably, you have a bad hard disk. Get a replacement if it is still under warranty.
Second, try to reset the BIOS to optimum setting.
Borrow and connect a new HD into the first IDE channel. Install Win98. If the new HD still gives the same problem, try to change your CMOS battery.
Get the latest BIOS update for your motherboard. Follow the proper procedure to update it.
Lastly, don't overclock your system when installing. Heat may cause your system to hang.

I've had the same problem three years ago when I bought an AMD K6-233MHz.
Like you, I couldn't understand where was the problem because it was too strange. When I tried everything, I brought back my new PC and, after analysing it, they told me thatmy motherboard was bad. They changed it and then it worked.

You tell you have a 233MMX? So I imagine it is not a new PC. Therefore, if it used to work well, try to find what hardware you have changed. It may be corrupted or plugged not well. Try to use an IDE cable that you are SURE it works (since you said you changed them) : bad IDE tranferts could create various problems (I know, I have had a bad IDE cable) that are "ununderstandable".
If your problem came suddenly, maybe you caught a virus. Find an antivirus and update it with the newest version (try Norton 5 if you don't have one).
Finnally, you may have a hardware problem : one hardware could be badly plugged or damaged.
If nothing of all this works, take some time : unplug EVERYTHING of your mothe
