AMIBIOS won't boot to floppy if it sees

By sublime1 ·
Pentium 233MMX, 64MB, 6GHD, new IDE cables, MB IDE. PC froze, not responding to anything. On reboot, it couldn't find boot record for C drive. AMI BIOS, don't have numbers now.
Sometimes will auto-detect HD, but numbers wrong. Sometimes acknowledges CD-ROM, but says not ATAPI compatible. Usually takes long time doing this. Other times, zips through detection process.

Bottom line: whether with HD #s it autodetects, or true figures, when it sees both HD and CD-ROM (could proceed with AV, FDISK, format, setup from WIN98 CD), it finishes boot process searching for boot record on HD, not finding, then searching for boot record on floppy drive, finding, and says "OK", starts to process floppy, printer initiates, & when WIN98 should start, hangs, with "_" in bottom left of screen! To boot from floppy, and activate CD-ROM, I put "not installed" in BIOS for HD, which means can't access to FDISK or format it! If BIOS acknowledges HD, it hangs at point where WIN98 should start from the floppy!

Get into the BIOS, there should be a setting on the second page about the order of booting, change it to CDROM,A,C or A,C to get it to boot to the floppy.

obvious stuff, tried early on....you weren't listening - it wasn't that the floppy wouldn't boot, just not when the HD was entered in the BIOS....

Hi!

If you're still reading answeres here's a suggestion for you.

If CPU is overclocked reset it to the correct clock speed.

If HD and CDROM is on same IDE interface, move CDROM to secondary IDE interface.

So HD is on primary and cdrom is on secondary, cause some IDE devices can't coexist.

Check boot order in BIOS so that it is at A,C

Check BIOS setting for PCI, ISO buss speed, memory speed, lower them to see if things work, when things work increase them again one step then see if things run smoothly and then raise them again until problems start.

PS! disable any virus scanning features in your BISO. D.S.

* Get the drive geometry (cylinders, head, sectors) and plug those numbers in manually. If it boots every time, then your BIOS is either in need of replacing/reflashing or the IDE controller is on it's way out.

* Remove the CD ROM (I assume it'sIDE) so that all you have is your hard drive on the primary IDE channel/controller. Be sure to configure your hard drive as a MASTER/SINGLE drive. If you can boot fine then your CD drive is conflicting. Try reseting the BIOS to autodetect your drive. If you still have the same problem, try moving the hard drive to the secondary channel.

You could also have a drive that's going out. Remember, the IDE drive controller is really built on the drive itself. The IDE controller is nothing more than the interface between the drive controller and the [computer].

BOL!

you weren't listening - I said "Bottom line: whether with HD #s it autodetects, or true figures...".......
But I didn't know that the IDE drive controller is built on the drive itself, thought it was on the MoBo...nonetheless, it was the drive.....
