(Another) 60 Miles to Change Lives

    Locked

    by tig2 ·

Well, I’m at it again. I am walking another 60 miles in the Twin Cities Breast Cancer 3 Day. Officially training begins tomorrow for the next 24 weeks. Unofficially, the first sponsored training walk was yesterday.

I have recruited a couple of friends- one who has committed to walk, his wife committed to crew. So I am working with them through their first walks to make sure that they are pacing themselves properly and have the right gear.

Speaking of gear, my fiance and I have to go through ours and figure out what we need to repair/replace. So much for Monday night!

For those of you who were with me for the walk last year (in spirit), you know that the preparation for this 60 mile endurance walk will require between 500 and 600 training miles. If you want to join the “virtual” walk, send me a peer mail and I will add you to my training newsletter.

This year’s fundraising has begun well and I am committed to raising $5000 again. I am required to raise $2200 but have been using the $5000 figure as a point of inspiration and hope. It represents the National average of the cost of a single chemotherapy treatment for a single individual.

The pink ribbon stands again as a reminder to BOTH men and women to perform regular self exams and for both men and women to have an annual mammogram. Yes, breast cancer is an equal opportunity killer.

This year, some 200,000 women will be diagnosed in some stage. This year, some 2,000 men will be diagnosed- often much later than a woman because the numbers are so low and many men don’t believe that they are also susceptible.

This year, some 40,000 women will lose the battle with breast cancer. They will be joined by some 450 men.

These are more than numbers. They are faces of people you know. My face is among them.

The next six months will be quite a ride. Lace up a good pair of walking shoes, get a pair of dry-wicking socks, and join me on the event of a life-time. In 60 miles, we really can change lives and bring HOPE.

    To a cure!

Edited because I can. And to correct a typo…

Edited again- the blog location is http://thebreastcancer3day2006.blogspot.com/index.html

I will be adding to it regularly!

I get to carry the spirit of every person who changed their avatar for the walk last year. I screen shot and NeverBusted screen shot everyone we could find with a pink ribbon- many of them still around. I transferred the printout to white ribbons that will travel through the next 60 miles with me.

You guys are all so great! It is good to know that you have my back!

I honestly don’t know that I do all that much. I walk. I want to see a cure in my lifetime. I want to be an old and gray survivor.

I want to see the day when we walk for this cause for the last time because there is no longer a need.

It is the supporters that keep us going. Last year, when I thought I couldn’t walk another step, I would turn a corner into a neighbourhood that knew we were coming and had decorated. I would get to a hill I didn’t think I could climb and see a woman in a gold minivan driving and honking and waving a pink boa out the window. Someone would be standing just off the path with spray bottles of water and packets of ice. Hands would reach out of nowhere to pat us on the back and say, “Thank you”.

It is the supporters that make it do-able. We just walk. You all INSPIRE.

        Edit- yet another typo.

I’m not sure if the small transparency will travel well, but can make it available if any one else wants to add it to their Avatars.

        edited to add the following

The background is fully transparent, I copied it onto my avatar jpg no trouble.

You can find this ribbon at

        http://www.bywater.net.au

select Downloads in the left hand menu,
then chose the ribbon from the two (small or large – I used the small) at the bottom of the list in the main screen.

absolutely brilliant, Ernesto! Have a from me! 😡

This way we can support Tigs’ training, and go for pink ribbon only avatars on the walk weekend, and turn the hot100 pink again!

Actually, I thought of adding a ribbon to my avatar

          by deadly ernest ·

In reply to ooh! ooh! ooh! me, please, DE!

while at church yesterday. Today I spent time making the rest of the square I used last year totally transparent, shrink it a bit, and copying it onto my normal avatar, so it looks like I’m wearing a pink ribbon. I did want to make it 50% transparent and put it over the Avatar – but I haven’t worked out hot to do that in Gimp yet. In the end, I think this looks better, looks like I’m wearing an actual ribbon when the photo was taken.

          You can find it at

          http://www.bywater.net.au

select Downloads in the left hand menu,
then chose the ribbon from the two (small or large – I used the small) at the bottom of the list in the main screen.

DE, that is just so cool! The support you all give me makes it all possible, you know.

Thank you so much for making the image available. The push to change avatars will happen again the week of the walk in August but the pink ribbon is a great reminder to not let things go unchecked.

          Thanks again!!!

In reply to Your avatar ROCKS!!!

to both show support, and retain their own avatar as well. The idea being to download the small or large image with a transparent background, and then copy it onto their existing avatar image, and post the amended image.

I’m seriously thinking of leaving the new avatar up as a constant support for you.

          edited to add

The pink ribbon with the transparent background is available in a small or a large version from my web site. Go to:

          http://www.bywater.net.au

Click on the ‘Downloads’ item in the menu on the left hand side.

Select the small or the large gif (both have transparent backgrounds), click on it. It will open in the main section of the page.

Right click and choose ‘Save to’ or ‘Save image’ from the pop up menu of your browser

If that doesn’t work, email me and I’ll send a copy back.

Then you just use an image manipulation program to adjust the size to suit your avatar, and copy and paste it in to where you want it. Or use the clone stamp if you want.

      Sixty Miles!

      by neilb@uk ·

In reply to (Another) 60 Miles to Change Lives

Well, girl, you’ve done it once so this year should be a piece of cake! :^0

I stopped walking last year when I went on holiday to the US (and behaved as a total slug when I got back) but I started in earnest again a month back so I wouldn’t feel too ashamed when you started ramping up the miles.

Last week, I totted up just over 40 miles over the complete week and – to put it in blunt English terms – I’m absolutely buggered. The thought of doing half as much again in three days makes my feet hurt just to think about it!

Stay injury-free and have the best time that you can while it feels like someone is sawing your toes off…

      Neil 😀

p.s. At least for the next six months, I can’t stop walking, can I? My waistline will probably thank you even if I might call you a few names on the steep bits. :p

Watched the clip with my husband. I was both amused and appalled. Appalled because my 2nd husband had a bit of an oedipal complex. Fortunately, his mother was considerate enough to die before we got married, so I didn’t have to witness it first hand..although, that may have been easier and could have prevented the 2nd marriage. Instead, I found out slowly over the course of our brief marriage.

My husband, however, was terribly amused and I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to kill him if he doesn’t stop with the ‘bitty’.

I didn’t force Steffi to post the URLs and GG didn’t even know what was meant by Bitty. So does that make Steffi less Pure than GG? 😀

If you read back you’ll see that I being the Pure One was warning Poor Mae against being approached with the demand for Bitty nothing else. :^0

As for the term Naughty Bits sorry but Kenny Everit used that in his TV Series called the Kenny Everit Video Show where the Good cartoon character lept into the Orgasmatron with his trusty Side Kick Calla an spend many hours there relaxing. :p

The Pommie Humour is actually quite good and I would think that anything that you can come up with as being Pure has already been used by the Poms to show just how Impure it actually is. :^0

The reason why Pom & Porn look so similar in some fonts is that the Poms invented Porn. They had a Movie Industry long before Hollywood was even a sparkle in someones eye namely the Mafia as a way to launder their dirty money and make it come out clean so they couldn’t afford any hint of controversy, scandal. :p

The Poms on the other hand invented the Goons, The Goodies and went on from there to continue with the best humour in the world and if I remember correctly it was in Monty Pythons Life of Brian that you saw the first Full Frontal Nude. But in that case He was just a naughty little Boy not your Messiah. 😀

When you have resources like that to fall back upon the poor Americans never stood a chance an had to look at reruns of I Love Lucy to think that was raunchy particularly the times when she was pregnant and this couldn’t be shown so you only ever saw Head Shots in the series. Actually when I think about it the decisions of the US Censors where nearly as funny as what the Poms where putting out as Comedy. :^0

As for Kenny Everit I think that he came after the Monty Python Series finished but before the Films started, but ages after The Goodies, Benny Hill, Charlie Drake the Worker and Marty Feldman. 😡

But I’m sure that Neils Translation Service will come up with a better and more full answer complete with dates and broadcast times, as well as Stations when he sees this. :0

Edited to add GG is our Majestic Majesty so she can do no wrong and it’s that evil Steffi who is dragging Her Mightily Pure Self down to the level of some student who is too vile and impure to work in the UK so she’s been Transported to Germany for a while in the hopes that the regimented life style there will help straighten her up and make her fit in better with the UK way of life. Of course if that doesn’t work she’ll be transported to AU and we’ll have another nasty Pom to control and make into a Decent Upstanding Member of Society. This is nowhere near as hard as it sounds as all that is required is to take her out as a Governess to some Farmer in the Bush drop her off at the Homestead and rush away before she realises that the place is deserted and when she finally arrives back in the nearest habitation with just the clothes on her back and even they are all torn to shreds she will by that time be willing to accept Authority and toe the line if it doesn’t kill her first. 😀 :^0

Be aware that there are three different types of shin splits and one sort is triggered by uphill and for another sort it’s downhill that does it and for the third sort, it’s both – although I expect you know that. 🙂

          by jamesrl ·

          In reply to Shin splits

Shin splints can be exacerbated by inadequate warmup and cooldown. Warmup is especially important, “cold muscles” tend to tear more than warm ones(doesn’t that make you feel good?).

But in my experience, ancient as it is, with shin splints, some of it is also bio-mechanically related. Worn shoes or shoes that are not quite right for your motion can also make shin splints worse. People with serious issues often see a specialist. If you were in Toronto, I could recommend some places.

In reply to Shoes and stretching

but I’ve worked out what caused mine. When I started walking seriously, I tended to try and “stride out” and that’s the absolute classic way to get agonising shin pains! I learned to push off better from the back and “chop” the stride in front and they went away. I also got support insoles but I find that its only my left leg that needs one.

I still find I can get them if a good-looking jogger sweeps past on the Thames River path and I unconsciously speed up to follow…

Last year I consulted with a podiologist and followed his recommendations. I tend to twist my feet when I walk so my shoes have a stabilizing base that corrects that. I also keep a strict count of the number of miles I put on a pair of shoes.

I have two pair (identical) that I used last year. Neither pair will make it through training and the event. So one pair will get used in training less but do one day of the event. I’ll get a third pair and begin breaking them in in June. They will do two days of the event.

I have seen what happens to people who don’t take care of their feet on this event. It looks painful.

And I have learned about some homeopathics that can help. Mostly, I plan to avoid it completely if I possibly can.

Way back last century (when I was in my 20’s) I rode in an MS-150 bike-a-thon. It was fun but I didn’t know enough people out of college that could sponsor me.

The first 75 miles were a killer because I tried to keep up with some heavy-duty bikers. By the end of the day, even Viagra wouldn’t have helped the numb bits. The second day I took it easier and was ready for another 25 after the 75 miles for that day were done!

You have me thinking that I should get into another one since I will turn 50 this year.

In reply to (Another) 60 Miles to Change Lives

Whilst the Impure Brigade and the Rest of the Gang are more than well aware of who you are and why you walk, why not add in a link to last years discussion on the walk?

That saves you wearing out your fingers from typing, puts links up for the ribbon avatars (again!) and gets the newer members of TR up to speed with your Quest. (which you know I’m wholeheartedly behind, and why)

If you still have the pics up somewhere, and the screenshots of the hot100, they would be good, too.

I’m just trying to save you a little time to do …… more……… training!

oh, and the one and only hint from me: if you can’t find suitable hills to prevent the shin splints, use water filled ankle weights on the flat. (when you remove them, you feel as if you’re feet aren’t quite on the sidewalk for a while! Most peculiar feeling! :p )

Tig, you know you have my support. Anything I can do, you know me well enough just to yell. I’m glad you’re doing this again.

Thanks. On behalf of an awful lot of family, and myself. Thank you.

1 No Bouncing this year as we all know that Tiggers love to bounce but some find it is like cheating.

2 Steffi has offered to train both the washing machine and Dryer to stop eating your socks as she has a need to whip something till it begs for mercy so you’ll get to keep all your socks this year.

Instead of Electrolytes in the Water Bottle put in Gin it might not work any better but then again Who Cares! You will not feel a thing till you start to sober up a long time after the event. 😀

As usual if you need anything just drop me a line and I’ll see what can be dug up.

          Dryer Warning: worm-hole alert

          by daveo2000 ·

In reply to No Bouncing??? :(

Col, I thought you knew about the reason for sock-eating dryers. Long ago it was discovered that people in the US are collecting too much. Among the things that are collected are European magazines which weigh too much.

Because of this, the weight re-distribution of the earth was causing a bitty of a wobble and the oceans, being fluid, started to balance this by flowing towards the weight, thus raising the water level around the US.

Engineers figured a very clever way to fix this so that almost nobody would notice: they put worm-hole-like teleportation devices in dryers which would send limited quantities of socks from the US to a remote region of the outback.

Didn’t you know about this? So PLEASE keep it a secret!

Apparently I’m not allowed to touch any of the socks that magically appear in the lower paddock. Apparently it was originally daveo2000 paddock but apparently he’s made a gift of it to Steffi. I think I know what he’s after but I’ll leave it at that because it would ruin his pure apparition at TR. Personally I don’t think that he wants to get into Steffi’s socks but something else as he’s been looking up her dresses now for ages. Now from what Dave tells me Steffi28 owns it and all the socks therein. :_|

Steffi has placed an electric fence around the paddock and razor wire everywhere so I don’t dare go near it because she has the razor wire trained to jump out and attack anything within 100 yards of the fence and then after the razor wire drags you onto the electric fence you cut yourself to bits killing yourself in the process. Only Steffi knows the secret way in and she’s not sharing it with anyone so unfortunately I can not give you any socks that appear there. :0

I watched that fence tonight as it ate several Possums 3 horses 50 Bullocks and a couple of Bats flying overhead. Everything ended up as nice 1/4 inch slices of the various animals so I’m staying away and not going near that monster under any circumstances. I’m sure that you can make a deal with Steffi over these and she can rescue them from that monster that she’s created. :^0

As for Dave I don’t think that there is any hope for him on either of the fronts that he attempts to put forward. 😀

you have the file saved to your hard drive?

          how big is the file?

do you have a firewall turned on?

what browser are you using? (I use FF2.00002)

how many did you try to upload at a time?

clear your temp folder, reboot, and try again. (from the RUN command, type “%temp%” without quotes, and delete everything you see there.)

When I put the photo in the field on my profile, I saw the http:// was already there, so I took it off of the URL link I pasted in there.

When I pasted Tig’s link, I left the http in and it worked.

Ok – you can stop laughing now. :p

Well it was supposed to be easy but!!!!

I got cornered into installing a domestic Self Install ADSL Kit from one of the major Telco’s here and it bit hard.

First thing that Destruction Manual didn’t have any Instructions except drop in the CD and work off that. I just know so much better but after forcing the Modem to the HTTP Page I just couldn’t find any reference to the User Name & Password to open the thing so out of desperation I used the CD. :_|

Well for 45 minutes it insisted on showing me how to plug in and attach things Already Done and I’m getting frustrated slightly then it comes to the stage of entering the User Name & Password for the Account, Silly me thought that this bypassed the Modems setup procedure and just entered the right things as all I had to enter was the first part of the E-Mail address up to the @ and then the Password which was easy and of course nothing worked. It failed to connect on 3 occasions and then forced me to go back to the start and walk through the entire installation procedure again. I double checked that I hadn’t made a typo and again it failed to connect so I rang the Telco and waited and waited 2.5 hours latter I was more than slightly frustrated but eventually the First Tier Help Desk Person answered the phone and I asked how to set up manually to avoid the CD.

Well Silly Me didn’t think for a single minute that the E-Mail account and password where the same for the modem to gain access to it as the actual setting should be. But apparently the Install CD was a muck up as they added the ISP’s name but forgot to add the .COM which for some strange reason caused some problems. :_|

Well as I had already tried 6 times by now to Log On the server at their end it was by now well and truly scrambled so they where concerned that it would require some major maintenance to set right like leave it for 24 hours and try again. I suggested that they change the Password and let me try again and after shutting down the Modem and then the computer it worked finally. So far so good till I came to connect the second computer to the LAN and there was nothing there. A quick look at the IP Config showed that the install CD had grabbed both Ethernet Sockets and allocated them both to the modem. Even deleting one of the ports didn’t have any effect so I set it to a static address and got a working network but no Internet connection to the second computer. Well you can’t have everything can you? 😀

But another 3 hours wasted I eventually forced the computer to share the second or in this case the primary Ethernet Socket and then using Brute Force forced the computer to share that connection and I had a working LAN with an Internet connection to both computers. Well better late than never and I updated the AV and Spy Ware Products on the second machine then looked at the usage over the past few hours which stated that the listed usage was 4 hours old .

Well I had only downloaded 79 MEG and his limit is 200 MEG as he doesn’t use the Internet at all and doesn’t need any long term high speed connection as it would only be a waste of money. Well I figure that in the first 6 hours that it was actually connected I had used the best part of a months worth of Net Time and had not even started to look at the Windows Updates or any of the Office Updates so they can wait till next month when he can update one machine and then leave it for another month then look at the available Office Updates. By my reckoning he’ll take about 4 months to get everything updated without running into any excess usage fees. :^0

Still not actually sure what I downloaded as I didn’t upload anything except 2 test e-mails to check that both accounts where working. Far short of a couple of hundred K’s so I’m not sure just what else was downloaded because all I did was update AVG AV Program Spy Ware S&D and AD AWARE SE on both computers and then check his E-Mail. Nothing of any consequence there so I’m a bit stumped as to what was actually downloaded but I’m not asking either.

          Col

Pink ribbon with transparent background available

In reply to (Another) 60 Miles to Change Lives

in a small (1kb) or a large (4kb) version from my web site. Go to:

      http://www.bywater.net.au

Click on the ‘Downloads’ item in the menu on the left hand side.

Select the small or the large gif (both have transparent backgrounds), click on it. It will open in the main section of the page.

Right click and choose ‘Save to’ or ‘Save image’ from the pop up menu of your browser

If that doesn’t work, email me and I’ll send a copy back.

Then you just use an image manipulation program to adjust the size to suit your avatar, and copy and paste it in to where you want it. Or use the clone stamp if you want.

Tig, I have no idea how I missed this discussion before now. None. Unless I was off-line for two days.

I’ve posted my training avatar. As I said elsewhere, it may look weird, but GIMP kicked my butt on this training exercise.

Step out, girl! With luck, you can double the donations from last year. I’ll do what I can, again. Do you have a link for donations yet?

      Good luck and God bless.

      Edit: wierd looked weird

Second edit: Disregard the question about donation website…I read the blog and found the link to http://www.the3day.org/twincities07/tricia
