APPCRASH in explorer.exe

By nigel129 ·
hi all,
anyone got any ideas how to cure the prob below. It happens when i right click a folder or icon (eg. to delete, or copy or explore). Right click is fine if used on desktop, or copy and paste text.
At the time this started, i was useing Vista Ultimate so banged in an upgrade to Win 7 to see if it would cure it. Nope. Tried all the recommended scans, (malwarebytes, superspyware etc). My thinking is its something to do with the content menu opening, but im hanged if i can find a cure.
thanks
nigel

Upgrade

by SPC_TCOL In reply to APPCRASH in explorer.exe

An Windows 7 upgrade gets the most people in even more problems then they had before.
I read somewhere that you can install 7 upgrade without having Vista installed, as long as you have the Vista CD, maybe it's time for formatting the HD

not sure on that

by nigel129 In reply to Upgrade

this prob arose while using Vista, only that i had a copy of 7 lying about is the only reason i tried to cure it with upgrade. I must be honest, as yet ive had no other probs running 7 but its early days. I might take this opportunity to clean reinstall 7 without existing OS installed and see how it runs.
TO JACKIE,
tried your suggestions to no avail, might be bite the bullet time but errors like this are common and it would have been nice to persevier with finding a solution AH BUT, if BUT was a donkey,we'd all have a ride. Thanks Microsoft for another incurable buggy issue.

problem with explorer in Vista and W7 that I can't put my finger on. Explorer is constantly crashing while doing a file search. I don't have this problem with XP.

Try this

by Jacky Howe In reply to soz for slow reply

Windows Vista does not clear the virtual memory pagefile when the system is shut down. This could lead to a corrupt Pagefile.
To enable this feature and clear the pagefile, start the Group Policy snap-in by clicking Start, Run and type in secpol.msc expand Local Policies, and then select Security Options. Right-click Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile and then click Properties. By default, it is disabled. To force Vista to clear the pagefile when the system is shut down, select Enabled. You can turn it back on again by following the above proceedure, but select Disabled.

Edit: modified a bit

No Joy

by nigel129 In reply to APPCRASH in explorer.exe

Nope, either it doesnt work, or wont work with win 7. It did report "fix applied" but that as good as it gets. Thanks for the link though, i still have to work with XP on occations so ill keep it for then.
Back to the current prob, there must be a fix out there somewhere, although annoying not having a fully functional right click, it such a minor thing im baffled its causing so much work to fix.
Keepem coming. Nigel

Does it happen in Safe Mode?

by Jacky Howe In reply to APPCRASH in explorer.exe

If not try this.

Vista and W7

Press the WinKey + r and type in msconfig and press Enter. Select Diagnostic Startup. Select the Services Tab. Down the bottom you will see a Box next to 'Hide All Microsoft Services' click on it to unselect all Microsoft Files.
Click on Disable all. Select the Startup Tab and click on Disable all.

If it works you will need to re-enable the items in the startup list one or two at a time in order to identify which one is causing the problem reboot each time you change something. Do the same for the Services.
