Asset Management and Software Licensing

By gworsley ·
How many organisations profess to having Asset Management including Software Licensing "under control" and should they go for "best of breed" bolted together or a one-vendor-does-all framework solution.

Under control is a poor indication

It is like asking how long is a piece of string. There are a lot of company's that have implemented some sort of IT Asset management program over the past 10 years. Those that are serious know that there is always other areas that need to be looked at.

As a former CITAM for two different companies, I can tell you that there are so many areas of ITAM that you are always looking at what is the next challenge. For good information about ITAM chack out the Internation Association of IT Asset Managers. There is a lot of good information comming from them.

As for the tools question, I have to say "It Depends". It depends of the complexity of your ITAM program, your infrastructure and your budget. Always define your requirements and then select the best tool that you can afford. As you implement your program successfully, you will be able to prove the benifit of additional funding for beter tools, and training.

Well actually...

I work in the market place and I'm trying to gauge peoples perception, understanding or perhaps misunderstanding of their requirements and the "rule" imposed by SOX, Cobit, ITIL, ISO/BS etc.

From what I've seen - "Best of breed" Vs. "Framework" seems to be about a 50-50% split.

Well its pretty hard to answer your question. As for now you can have an idea from the fact that almost all the organizations having more than 400 employees do have these kind of software.

Plus which one is installed and with what functionalities depend upon their requirement and budget.
