Authentium anti-virus
Lockedby brifd1 · about 17 years, 8 months ago
I have an anti-virus program that I’m trying to install, but it won’t because I get a prompt that Authentium antivirus is running. However, I cannot see that in Control Panels nor in the Programs folder, I’ve checked msconfig for clues, and it’s nowhere to be found in the registry. Online, it appears that Authentium is not a free anit-virus product, so how did I get it, and how do I get rid of it???

It should have an uninstall program… either in its directory or in the start menu.
Look under command antivirus.
Never used it myself though.
How did you get it? Are you the only person that’s ever used the PC? If no there are too many possibilities to name, if yes that it might have come pre installed or packaged with something else.

It may have come with your computer. osr a dear friend thought you should have antivirus protectectio, as you should. however i have never heard of this particular viruscan until now. it certainly isn’t in the top 10 effective viruscan programs. If you cannot find an uninstaller as mentioned above, you can try some of the AddRemoveCleaners available on the Internet. They should be able to find Authentium in their list.
If that fails get help from someone familiar with registery editing as a last resort.
If it’s anything like Norton or Mcafee it won’t be completely removed by an uninstall anyway. -

Authentium builds private-label security solutions on behalf of
leading ISP’s, developers, and institutions. You most likely have a
suite you got from your ISP or web-portal that includes the
Authentium engine. uninstalling that suite will clear your system. -

It’s a freebie called MyUninstaller.
Egads, there are a lot of programs that aren’t either in Programs or the Control Panel!-

Found a solution for deactivating Authentium antivirus…

Hi all,
Having the same problem, and searching the web, I found a solution for this problem.dvpapi seems to be the running Authentium Antivirus. Activating Windows Task Manager and ending the process dvpapi (in the processes bar) stops the program from running and allows installation of the new program (eg System Mechanic). Be sure to deactivate dvpapi from autorunning at next reboot!
A good program to see all running processes is the freeware “Autoruns” from Sysinternals (available at Sysinternals.com). Under Description you’ll find dvpapi, the Authentium Antivirus. There you can also deactivate the program from autorunning.
Hope I could help solving your problem as I could mine.
Cheers,
BamSec1.

I just went through the same confusion…

…but I think I discovered the answer before I deleted the program (fortunately).
Even though “Authentium” is made by Command Software and I never bought the product, it is running on my machine.
I use a suite of programs called Freedom that was provided by my ISP cable company (Adelphia – now Time Warner). It consists of a Firewall (Zero Knowledge Systems), Anti-Virus program, Form Filler, and Anti-Spyware. Their Anti-Spyware component is indeed this program (Authentium by Command Software).
Hope you found that out before it was too late. I found your post from doing a search on that name.

my solution, go to program files, then to common files, click on the command software folder and then on the avsdk installer. before it installs it gives you an option to uninstall. it worked for me and i was having the same type of problem.

There is a program that I use religiously that will remove this, as well as lots of other fine tuning of your pc. The program is called CCleaner (Crap Cleaner). The program is free, and you can download it at http://www.ccleaner.com . It will remove and uninstall programs that don’t necessarily have an uninstall function in add/remove programs. When you open the program, click on the tools button and remove the Authentium Antivirus using Crap Cleaner and clicking on the “Run Uninstaller” button on the right. Don’t make a mistake and click the “Delete” button. I just removed it from my pc as well. I guess it came with vista since I never installed it. Good luck and I’m sure this will fix your problem.

Actually Authentium is SM7

After an update of SYstem Mechanics Pro 7 on another machine, I found that the update actually installed the Authentium Antivirus software where it used to be iolo antivirus. Just an update from my previous post stating that I thought it might have installed with vista. Not the case!
Anyway, Enjoy.

I have found that components of Authentium anti-virus are commont to a number of commercial antivirus programs, i.e. CA, Inc for one. Try downloading Security Task Manager (free trial)from http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/index.html. I found this to be very useful. It shows a lot more information that Windows Task Manager and allows you to quarantine/remove items. I actually started removal of an item this way and had it take me to a Repain/Change/Uninstall screen for Authentium anti-virus. It seems I have a lot of left over bits from old antivirus programs that didn’t remove with their uninstall routines.

This an ISP tack -on by Comcast

I ran an Windows installer clean tool to remove Authenitium version 4,94,107,521 created in my system on 7/09/07 until it re-formulated itself under a different version. This did fix the problem. Running CCLeaner also knocks out the real-time/antiviral feature of Iolo’s registry. I think Comcast regards Iolo’s firewall xpacket.sys as a kernel program. My theory is that Iolo is viewed as some kind of threat to Comcast’s best friend McAfee.
