Back to basics: Before the Big question - What's worth knowing?

I always jump the gun on these <a href=http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-1035-0.html?forumID=102&threadID=339060&start=0&tag=content;leftCol>big things</a>. I can only be enawed at the deliberacy and applied hesitation of Santeewelding in this...
Asking the big question doesn't really make sense without the underlying Need-to-know... it reads in the Manual, this whole thing is on a need-to-know basis.
So, what's worth knowing in the first place?
