backing up multiple tapes on Server 2003

By boardin4life85 ·
Hi, I am using Windows Backup utility on Windows Server 2003 and only have one tape drive. Is it possible to do a backup that requires two tapes? We are doing a backup at night and one tape is not large enough and we aren't here to know if it asks for a second tape to be inserted or not, or if the backup just stops because multiple tape backup isnt possible.

Also, is it possible to do a full backup and an incrimental backup on the same backup job?

If you can help or give some advice that would be great. Thanks

If you are doing unattended Tape Backup's

by OH Smeg In reply to backing up multiple tapes ...

You really need an Autoloader as this is the only reliable way to perform unattended Backup's.

The 2003 Backup Utility should span more than 1 tape though to be perfectly honest it's not the best option open to you and while it will do the job the odds are that if you have to replace the hardware you will be unable to read or recover the data from the tapes.

As far as performing a Full Backup and an Incremental one at the same time no this isn't possible as they are two different procedures you can do one or the other but not both at the same time.

However with the right software and an Auto Loader it's possible to program this option to first run a full backup and then run an Incremental Backup so you have better Data Protection though I would personally run the Incremental first then change the tape and run the full backup after the incremental.
