Blank Screen on Win 98

By NLane126 ·
Blank screen on windows 98.

Need help my windows 98 only shows a blank screen when I boot up, the curser just sits there and there is nothing I can click on. Upon boot up it goes through the bios then boots into 98 then the task bar appears for less that a second and is gone. I have tried rebooting to safe mode hitting F8 and well it gets me into safe mode but the task bar is still missing and it only shows safe mode in the top corners.

I also tried running scanreg/restore and scanreg/fix at the command prompt. It ran through the scanreg but still continuing to do the same thing. At one time it said my himem.sys was missing so I put in my 98 startup disk and did a copy himem.sys c: windows and still got nothing .So now I ask the experts what?s my next move.

Nathan

I had exactly the same problem on exactly the same date as you did. I had a message the day before containing the word "spyware." I immediately scanned with both AVG6.0 and Norton Antivirus. (The next time I booted, I had the exact problem as you did. I deleted and reloading windows but am getting "out of memory errors" and am still working on the problem."

Insert a Windows 98 startup and boot computer, select option to run setup without cd rom support, press enter, once the process is complete eject floppy and reboot.

If this does not clear up problem combined with the previous suggestion to use FDISK /mbr,you will want to check for memory or graphics card to make sure they are still seated properly,if they are, then update the graphics card driver.
