can not install nt4 server

By Clive(Maddog)Mills ·
after successfuly migrating to windows 2000 from 98se so that I could get exsperience with win 2000 I shortly had a severe crash with left the system unbootable all repair options failed, and reintalling din't work .So I formatted the harddrive using fat 16 (all previous attemts to reinstall either windows 2000 or nt4 server failed with messages that the drive was either unformatted or damaged.
8063mb on disk 0 at id1 on bus 0 C: 2047mb formated or damaged with 1mb unpartitioned space
13358mb 1035mb unpartitioned space
and when choosing to format it would fail and leave Me with f3 to abort installation)After fdisk and format athough the drive is a seagate 17.5 gb only one partition of 2.75 was created and the rest was inaccessable. After using disk manager/disk wizard I had eight 1.75 approx patitions and was able to install 98se(fat16) but nt4 still failed, plus I had 2 drives listed athough only one in reality disk1 17.5 gig disk 2 100mb. I then managed too install win 2000 onanouther partion but half the partions vanished leaving me with 5 1.78gb partions (out of 17gb)also a full install of win 2000 with no other software has used up 1.18 gb with 606mb free ? I have tried to do a low level format but have so far failed athough i have no experiance of this procedure and any help would be apprieciated I need a nt4/ win2000 and win 98to practice my MCP skills thanks

In this type of scenario, I have also used the NT4.0 CD to boot up with. I use the partitioning utitility during NT setup and it removes all FAT type partitions and NTFS so you can start from a clean slate and repartition everything. After you partition your drives, then you can exit without having to install NT first.

The trouble is I did not remove the ntfs partition first and subsequent fdisking and formatting now dosn't seem to work as i say even seagates low level format dosn't seem to work athough win98 is now installed fine

step 1: run fdisk and remove ALL partitions, including "non-DOS" partitions. Reboot.
step 2: run fdisk /mbr.(this replaces the master boot record!!)
step 3: run fdisk and create new partitions.
You should now be able to see all of your hard drivespace.

I tried all that including a low level format athough now i have installed nt4 server on anouther computer athough what is so annoying is that i have installed a duel boot system onthe dodgy drive that consists of win98se fat16 , win2000 workstation fat16 and since last night win2000 advanced server all on the hard drive that wont accept nt4 strange but still never mind . Now who shall i give the 500 points too.
