Can't access 2nd HD on Win98 and wrong f

By mayon ·
I can't access my 2nd IDE HD on my 486/66mz Gateway. Also, the floppy drive, instead of 3.5 (1.44 type) it was 5 1/4 type. But, on Safe Mode,I can access the 2nd IDE drive and the floppy is still in 5 1/4 type.

Pls. help!

The root of your problem appears to be a low CMOS backup battery. You have an older 486, and it's probably time to change the battery now.

Run the "BIOS Setup" routine Ctrl + Alt + Esc should get you in on a Gateway, and jot down the settings.
Change the CMOS backup battery.

After doing so, you'll have to re-enter the CMOS configuration settings. Pay particular attention to the values for your floppy disk drive and secondary IDE hard disk drive--you'll probably have to correct these values (3.5", 1.44MB for the floppy and the correct C-H-S entries for your secondary IDE drive) before saving the CMOS setup information.

The floppy identification problem is obviously a misidentification in your CMOS setup. If it worked properly in the past, this is probably a symptom of a CMOS battery on its last legs. Replace the battery and change the drive A: type in your CMOS setup program. Any BIOS on a 486 motherboard may be old enough that it defaults to the 5.25 drive type.

Your Hard Drive problem sounds like your drivers are not properly installed in the device manager. The symptoms you describe indicate the fixis too long to address here, but it involves using Plug 'n Play to remove/reinstall the hard drive drivers if that is any help.

I don't know how the problem began, but a used PC I recently acquired was also coming up as 5.25 instead of 3.5 drive. I finally deleted the floppy drive controller when the BIOS would not let me specify the drive type ("reserved" it said), and it detected the floppy controller and 3.5 drive upon reboot. Try it IF you can't change it in BIOS first.
This problem with the hard drive, is it a new drive/ recent addition?

The HD might be a reversed or loose IDE cable, incorrect jumper settings (see HD documentation), or a prob w/ the IDE controller. Good luck, hope this helps.
