Can't Ping or RDP my computer!

By scott.gaudet ·
I can Remote Desktop onto other machines. However, when I'm at the other machines I can't get to my own computer, also I can't ping my computer which time's out after three attempts. If I try to connect to my admin share via the UNC Path, I also can't do that. I have checked my settings, Remote Desktop is enabled. We are behind a firewall, which is mentioned in many articles. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.

Is your machine on the same LAN as the other machines you mention? Did you try pinging by IP Address or just by Host Name?

First things first.

Do tracert to your IP address.
C:\Documents and Settings\serge>tracert

Tracing route to over a maximum of 30 hops

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms router []
2 4 ms 3 ms 3 ms

Trace complete.
If it stops on a router, you have to check ACL.

So what is

Do a nslookup and see what that device is. That's where your packets stop.

Right click on My Computer, System Properties, Remote, check Allow Users to Connect Remotely to This Computer.

Then, Select Remote Users and add your user/s.

Also, make sure if the Windows Firewall is on that you don't have Don't Allow Exceptions checked. Or, same basic principle for any third party firewall.

If you go into Control Panel, Windows Firewall, Exceptions, you should see an exception for Remote Desktop and it should be checked.

Rick, I did previously check all what you asked me to do. I just finished, and confirmed all the steps that you ask. By looking at my settings, It should be working.
