Cant' reach certain websites

By paperclip101 ·
For about 3 months now, I have been unable to access certain websites such as the home page at microsoft.com, (I can reach the update page, but if I try to go to any other part of Microsofts's website, I'm out of luck), symantec.com or any of its counterparts (cannot access the Norton anti-virus update section), familytreemaker.com, angelfire.com and numerous others. I've turned cookies on and off and on again, re-installed Windows, checked all the internet settings and even turn ON things that were never ON before, tried turning them back off again too - No luck. At each site I am unable to access, I get the error message "There was no response. The server could be down or is not responding. If you are unable to connect again later, contact the server's administrator."

I am sure the problem is not with my ISP because the problem started with my old ISP. I have recently moved and now have a completely different ISP in another state. The same problem exists here in my new location as did in my o

It does sound like a DNS problem I would try dowloading a browser like Opera you can find it at shareware.com it is pretty small so it is an easy download and is pretty straight foreward as to settting it up. If it works Ok then you have a browser setting that is causing problems such as active X controls since it does sound like you are using IE Explorer. If Opera works ok you are 90% ther.

If Opera does not work then you have to dig a litle deeper go to Netzero.com and download their software for free internet access. and when you connect thru them does te problem appear if it does not then you know it is your dial up networking configuration somehow. bets thing to do is delete the connection you had then re add it.

If the problemcontinues with Netzero. then the problem may be your modem although i cannot see how it would be. You mentioned you could not get to symantecs web site did you try the text only version it is at

http://www.symantec.com/us.text.index.html

if this works then it is

I heard somewhere that sometimes sites are unavailable when you try to go directly to them, but when you use a public proxy in some other geographic location it might work. I don't know exactly how reliable that information is, but I thought I'd offer it up. I had a list of these proxies, but I seem to have misplaced the site's URL.

If your old ISP was AOL ... they do not use the whole M$ ie but a sub-set of it, so there is a problem with upgrades potentially in conflict. AOL is not the only outfit that does that kind of thing.

You are here right - did you use the same computer as the one that can't go the other places?

Are you using a fax modem that answers the phone for you when you are not at your PC?

There are types of software that grab portions of your communications software ... I have to shut down Windows& reboot to get rid of the other guy who is hanging on my comm, so that I can use my main connection dude.

I also have interfereence problems if my portable phone is off of its hand set when using my PC to talk to the internet.
