Can't stop menacing hangups in Win XP Home

By len.piko ·
I built a new system with Intel dual processor at 2.2GHz. The ram is 4GB DD2 667Mhz. The hard drive is 250GB. The power supply is 300Watts. The motherboard mfg. is Biostar. I also installed a DVD/CDRW drive and a CD drive. Everything works fine except this system randomly hangs-up in which I have to manually shut it down to restart. I am able to get onto the Internet.
So far I have swapped out new memory, new hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Home three times with the same result; random hang-ups.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

It does'nt hangup in any particular app. It hung up while attempting to logon to my account once. It did not hangup while just sitting idle. It has hungup during a fresh install of win xp home. What is a Nix LiveCD? Thanks alot for your responses. If you have anymore suggestions feel free to help.

'Nix live CD

An operating system you can boot from CD to see if the XP install is your problem. If the system will run another OS without problems, it may be an XP driver issue or other software fault.

These are smaller distros, but choose whatever, download, then burn the ISO file to CD\DVD.

I personally recommend Knoppix

If the new version is anything like the old one I have, its awesome. Right down to backup software that allows you to burn CD's, even if you only have one CD drive! And the GUI is super easy to navigate. I used it as my fixall CD for a long time. And for worst case scenarios, as a backup OS to research fixes for my Windows problems.

Your next port of call will be the Processor......

by Peconet Tietokoneet In reply to Can't stop menacing hangu ...

Take off the heatsink and fan and remove the processor. Give each of them a very good clean, (make sure you are well grounded/earthed). Replace the processor and apply a very small amount of thermal paste and spread evenly over the processor. Next, replace the heatsink and fan. When done re-boot the computer and give it a work out (i:e, do some text or some gaming to push the processor) to see if it keeps on hanging.
Hopefully this should cure your issues.

Please post back if you have any more issues.

Has anyone suggested adequate cooling?

by dh9777usa1 In reply to Can't stop menacing hangu ...

It sounds just like a system I had that kept freezing at different times but eventually it only took about 10 minutes where both the processor fan and internal exhaust fan was inadequate after I added a 512 MB graphics card. It was throwing off so much heat it was overheating either the processor or something on the mother board because the system couldn't draw out the heat fast enough. I had to replace the cooling fan with a copper job and a faster rear fan to fix the freezes.

So I figure its unlikely, however, he can try running the system with the case open and see if it still freezes.
