Can't stop menacing hangups in Win XP Home

By len.piko ·
I built a new system with Intel dual processor at 2.2GHz. The ram is 4GB DD2 667Mhz. The hard drive is 250GB. The power supply is 300Watts. The motherboard mfg. is Biostar. I also installed a DVD/CDRW drive and a CD drive. Everything works fine except this system randomly hangs-up in which I have to manually shut it down to restart. I am able to get onto the Internet.
So far I have swapped out new memory, new hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Home three times with the same result; random hang-ups.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the response. The fans are brand new plus this system has a case fan which both seem to operating fine. I have checked the CPU temp often and it averages about 38 degrees.

It is the OS

The cause it possibly Windows XP 32 bit. IT will not run well on dual core processors and I have tried this myself. I initially installed and ran 32 bit XP Pro on my dual core machine in it's first incarnation (different Mobo now). Assuming that CPU you have is a 64bit chip, that is the problem.

You will have to either get Win XP Pro x64 bit edition or Vista. If you get XP, you can try Tiger Direct. I paid $139.99 for it there and you will find two version on the website. BE CAREFUL: One of these is the straight 64bit edition and will not accept 32 bit drivers, applications or software.
Read the descriptions. One of them will mention 32 bit software more than once. That one is the 64bit edition that will run both 64/32bit software and applications.

If you choose to dump windows and run Linux just be warned that not all Linux distros will run on a 64bit CPU.

Good Luck.

Thanks for your suggestions. I ordered another Pentium Dual Core processor to see if the other cpu was bad. So far the only other thing that I didn't try was another MB or 64 bit OS.
