CD contents not being displayed by Windows

By stykfigure ·
A friend recently purchased a Dell PC running XP. While I was over cleaning all the Dellware crap off of it, I ran into a snag. The CDs that I brought would not display in Windows Explorer. It autoplays the Image Download and does nothing to display the contents beyond that, just acts like I never clicked the drive letter. I checked to see if the window was hung, and it still showed processing I don't think it was racking up CPU% like a hung app either. I tried another CD just to see if the one I had just burned had problems, which is possible. The same results with the other CD. I tried using <SHIFT> to keep autoplay from running (couldn't remember where the Regkey was to disable), and this did stop the Autoplay, but still did not display the contents on the 2nd CD. I tried the 1st CD with this method, and it just kept 'reading' like it was hung. I decided to try viewing the contents sans UI (DOS), and could view the contents with no problem on both CDs. I thought maybe Nero had added a format to it making it unreadable w/o Nero installed, so I installed it. Still no luck with using the UI to display the contents. This problem appears to only be with CDs at this point. I have set folder options to allow me to view all (including sys and ext) files. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Maybe it's just dirty or disconnected.

A little more info

by stykfigure In reply to CD contents not being dis ...

Sorry was a little vague with the details. I'm not sure what brand of CD drive it is, but I'll check on that this weekend when I get back over there. It is a CD-R/DVD combo drive. The 2 CDs I tried were: 210MB CD-R and a DVD+-R. The DVD+-R was the one I had the least amount of trouble with. I haven't had a chance to check on the Nero cmdline/iso idea, but will do so when I get back over there this weekend. I was hesitant to re-install the drivers because he has dial-up and I was due at work right afterwards:) I will give all this a shot and post again when I have an answer Thanks again for all your help and patience.

CD contents not being displayed by Windows

Hello there,

I was wondering if you ever found a solution to this issue. I am grappling with the same. I am unable to view the content of the CD...I have tried uninstalling all my security tools and killing all the unnecessary processes. I am able to see the content sometimes, but as soon as I try a different CD it's the same story...When I try the CD that I was able to see it's the same way.

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds familiar

by KrazyKyngeKorny In reply to CD contents not being dis ...

I had the same problem w/my PC. Turned out the drive had gone belly up. It happened all at once.

Is the drive (by any chance) a Philips? Mine is, and once it quit, I could see the info on the drive, but it would not read.

Seems Phillips used some Chinese import software drives, and the drivers you get for those drives require a lot of high-tech tweaking to get them to work. If you did a defrag while you were deleting the software (I did defrag) that killed it.

In windows explorer right click the cd drive and select properties, and click on recording. Click the check box to Enable CD recording on the drive and it should work.
