CD/DVD isnt recognized but driver is fine

By geofffox89 ·
Hi, Im having a bit of trouble with my new (two months since I bought it) Presario CQ50 Laptop, with Windows Vista as the operating system. Up until about a week ago, I was able to insert CDs and DVDs and then run them without difficulty. However, now I can insert them into the machine, but the laptop doesnt recognise that a CD is in, and apparently the drivers are all working properly.

Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, nothing changed, and I tried a system restore from two different points, and it was cancelled after rebooting due to an unspecified error. Can anyone help me?

Here are my drivers, if it helps:
disk drive: ST9250827AS ATA Device;
DVD/CD-ROM Drive: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7561S ATA Device)

Just to be clear here ...

Are you talking about factory manufactured optical discs?

Or do you mean blank discs that have been burned in a computer optical drive?

Neither one.

Neither one works, Ive tried both a burned DVD, store-bought DVD and a store-bought CD. They work on other computers, but when I put them into my laptop they dont even spin.

Boot from CD

First, try booting from a bootable CD to verify that drive is fully functional.

Is drive listed when you open Computer?

Nothing spins.

Its listed yes, as DVD RW Drive. And any CD I put in doesnt even spin.

Well - if it doesn't spin, the hardware is definitely knackered...

Are you SURE it doesn't spin? Normally you can HEAR it increase in speed as it reaches spin-up speed.

If it isn't even turning then, a disc not being recognised is the least of your problems. But since it's only 2 months old, you'll be covered by the warranty so this situation calls for a return to base for a repair under guarantee I think. :)

Ill bring it in.

Ok, Ill bring it in to get fixed, thanks for the advice.

I could have written your posting myself, same problem, same trial and errors.

Question: Did you ever find a solution?

similar problem

by Giph In reply to Same Problem with HP G70

I have an hp pavilion dv7-2170us which has this same drive, but mine spins & plays previously burnt discs from boot as well as in vista 64 bit as well as dual booting into elive as well as ubuntu. What does not work is playing actual DVD's. nothing happens in vista or ubuntu. It used to, & I have only had it for a while. I would like to upgrade the firmware for this device. Any advice would be most appreciated.
