cd-rom not showing in "my computer"

By dgsand ·
I have 2 cd drives that show up in device manager but not "my computer".I tried to read an old hard drive and got a ? mark next to the hard drive and both cd's.After removing the hard drive I found the cd's gone.
Any help appreciated.
Both drives were functioning properly prior to this point.

IDE Controller

by TheChas In reply to cd-rom not showing in "my ...

It is likely that the hard drive changed how Windows was addressing the drives through the IDE controller.

The first thing to do, is open device manager and remove the IDE controllers.

Close device manager and restart your computer.

Windows "should" install the IDE controllers and all connected drives.

If you get any errors, or the drives are still missing, the next step is to install the device drivers for the chip-set on your motherboard. Get these from the system, motherboard, or chip-set manufacture.
When downloading from the chip-set manufacture, make sure that you get the correct version for your specific chip-set.
