    CDROM Not Recognized

    I received a donated computer for our school which the donater said the harddrive had been formatted. (a Dell PowerEdge 2200 computer).

    My problem… when I go to re-install the Windows 98 OS it does not read the CD ROM so I cannot install my OS. I had this problem once before and am totally blank on how I fixed it.

    Can you please give me step by step instructions on how to get the computer to read the CD ROM so I can install an OS and get make this computer usable?

      You need a book diskette with the CD ROM drivers on it. The easiest way to get one is to make one from another system running WIN98.
      Go to the Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs – Startup Disk.

      The PowerEdge computers are usually “servers.” Do you know if the cd-rom device is a SCSI drive or IDE? If it is SCSI, you will need to get SCSI cd-rom drivers and you need to know which adapter is in the computer.

      The person who said the hddhad been formatted, may have formatted it in NTFS as well.

      You might want to call/contact Dell as well. For any specific modem or other drivers your system may need.

      Another place for support is bootdisk.com, get a bootable diskette for 98 from there.

      I agree with Paul

      try to get your hands on the floppy boot disk that comes with windows 98 as it loads universal cdrom drivers allowing you to install the operating system from the cdrom. I would most definatly try this first. If not available making a startup disk as suggested will also work.

      Considering that is a server, I suspect even the hard drive may be SCSI.

      The first thing you may need to do is obtain a floppy with the appropriate SCSI drivers (most likely a set of diskettes). Load your SCSI CD-ROM drivers from the SCSI Setup utility contained on the disks ( you may need to contact the donator or Dell about this, at least they can tell you what was originally on the server), then you will likely have to f-disk and reformat the Hard Drive with the FAT32 File System (LikeAnna said, it probably was formatted in NTFS — for Windows NT, or 2000). Once you’ve installed the SCSI utility, it should recognize your drives. Ensure your boot order in the BIOS setup utility is set to SCSI to boot from first or second.
