Click-click sound on pc boot

By tembss ·
When I switch on the PC, I get a continuous click-click-click sound. When I press and hold the reset button, the click-click sound stops and the boot-up process only goes as far as reading the CD-ROM and then stops. When I let go of the reset button, the click-click sound continues. I suspect the motherboard, but am not sure.

Had the exact same problem on a Dell Optiplex GX270 just the other day. Same symptoms, same clicking, same flickering of the power and drive light. The clicking was the floppy drive. The problem turned out to be a bad power supply. After replacement, everything worked fine.

The clicking is probably the heads on the drive.
I would back up data asap and look at a new drive!

I have experienced this problem personally on occasion with other clients computers. It certainly sounds like the hard drive has failed since it will only recognize the other drives. Not all is lost though. You need to install a new drive, set the jumpers on the new one to master (but not for a single drive), connect the "failed" drive to the second connector on the ribbon wire that connects your new drive. Set jumpers for either slave or to cable select (csl). Restart the computer, install your Operating system, then see if your old drive is visible in "my computer". If not, turn off computer, remove "failed drive", tap with hammer(can't do any more harm than is already done), reinstall it, start computer again, and see if your bios will "mount" the failed drive. If not send me a private email, and I will make arrangements to at least get your data off it.

To keep it short & sweet...

Sounds like your HDD is dead. When powered on, do you see and LED lit? If so, then it's, more than likely, good. Have you tried another HDD? If not, try another one, that will boot your OS, of course. If it does, then you found the culprit.

That sound is coming from the hard drive with the boot sector. Start PC with a boot disk, at command prompt type in chkdsk/f/r. Run that on both HDD's. Then perform a defrag.
That will help but its an indication that your drive is going bad.

The most common piece of hardware that can cause click, click etc is the power supply. If the voltage out is low it cannot supply the current required. If you have a spare try that, if not buy one as a test for all PC's that go wrong.

Hello. Weeks ago a friend told me that is pc went dead. The power supply died. I changed it, and it happened the same thing. It was the motherboard, a friend of mine tested with another processor and the problem still was there. Try to test your mb with other processor or vice-versa.
See ya.
