Click-click sound on pc boot

By tembss ·
When I switch on the PC, I get a continuous click-click-click sound. When I press and hold the reset button, the click-click sound stops and the boot-up process only goes as far as reading the CD-ROM and then stops. When I let go of the reset button, the click-click sound continues. I suspect the motherboard, but am not sure.

Hi. Just like I had suspected in my post, the MB was the problem. I bought a new MB, and a power supply (just in case..). I tested the new power supply with the old MB and it still gave me the beeps. Then I tried the new MB with the old power supply and .. no beeps. Well, since your answer was the closest... you get the points...

as per the majority votes to replace your hard disk, Please check your bootable hard drive in another computer before you plan to buy.

I am sure your hard drive is tick-tick-tick instead of click-click-click. Tick is certainly a damaged hard drive.

Good Luck

From all the previous answers, you can see that it is clearly a hardware problem. As a few have answered that, the number of beeps tells you where the error is. Without being able to boot up at all makes these more difficult.
My suggestion if you are still not sure of which item is the problem, remove any PCI cards (like Network cards), any upgrades like a new graphics card, and replace with the old one. You can start a system without any monitor, mouse, and keyboard. If you have a USB keyboard, see if you can find one that is not that you can directly connect in the system. USB keyboard does not work until those drivers are loaded.
See if you can get at least the system to stop beeping or to where the system will give you a countable number of beeps. (If you search, you can get the list of beep errors for your system). There is still a lot that you can to go from here. Ensure you keep notes if you need to disassemble the system down. Documentation is the key to reassembling it.

You dont say if the sound comes from the speaker or internal in the PC cover.
If the click sound comes through the speaker it could be a sticky key.
If from the PC case - could be HDD fail
