I ran into the same problem this week with a HP Pavilion 6635 running NT 4.0. My company bought 2 identical machines and one worked fine with NT and the other one came up with a cmos error. I tried everything I could come up with, service packs, tech support, comparing the the settings between the 2 machines, but it didn't help. I finally had to take the offending machine back, after the system "lost" the OS. If taking it back is an option, do it quick! Hope this helps.

First, you need to remove all cards except for video. Use "Default Settings" for BIOS.
If it is still erratic, I would flash [upgrade] the BIOS. Make sure you can document the BIOS upgrade from the mainboard manufacturer first. Generally, I have found that the BIOS flash will cure almost every time.

If there is a screw through the motherboard near the CMOS battery, make sure it has good rubber washers sealing it. A slight short from metal to metal contact can leech off enough power, grounding the battery into the case so that it kills it.

One option I didn't see mentioned is trying an additional battery. Most motherboards have a set of pins into which you can plug and external battery. I've seen replacment batteries of the type used for cmos do this in other devices as well - such ascameras and watches not working consistantly ofter bettery replacement.
