Combat Burn out, what works for you

By Jcritch ·
As a old fart in the IT field (20+ years) maybe the old dogs need to teach the new dogs some tricks to stay alive and healthy in this field.

I am calling on everyone young and old, what do you do to keep from burning out?

Yep,share your interests with friends, but do alternatives as well.I like nothing better than going into the local countryside with my wife, and son at the weekend, and not planning anything, but just chilling, and see what happens. It's that balance that helps me to briefly "switch-off".Also,I have friends outside work who like to keep up with technology,so I'm often exchanging ideas, and learning all the time.

Throttle down your enthusiasm a little bit, so that it'll last.

> THIS IS FUN PEOPLE !!!

Things done for fun are usually done for free.

From your profile:

>I am a techie with the company currently handling sales people's 'techie' problems (most of it is "MY EMAIL IS NOT WORKING !!!")

After a couple of thousand normal, and/or a couple of ten beastly "patients" it will no longer be fun, believe you me.

Pure tedium. You'll soon get tired of this.

Watching a guy being geeksploited is just about as troublesome as watching poultry processing kill line at work

You should know best, but check this anyway

geeksploitation: A term in the Internet industry used to describe the "taking advantage of 20-something digital workers who are flushed with pioneer enthusiasm and willing to work long hours" if rewarded by certain freedoms on the job (as in no dress code, flextime, an onsite cappucino machine or pool table, etc.)
