Compaq Servers?

By sdmiller ·
I am not sure if I am putting this in the right category, but I am interested in buying an NT server. I have been looking at Compaq, but am sure if everything (Hard Driv's) are proprietary. I already own serveral scsi drives?

Thanks,
Scott

Compaq Servers?

When you buy a Compaq server the hard drives are not proprietary. They ARE however OEM'd specifically for compaq and you normally have to go to compaq for repair/replacement.

However that being said, they do come on proprietary sleds if you order Hot Swap drives. You can take them out of the sleds and then you have normal scsi connections.

You can buy sleds for the hot swap bays. I ended up with a server w/o sleds and I aquired a few. They run generally under $200 for the sled. around $100-150 I believe.

If you buy a server WITHOUT Hot Swap (Saves you a lot of money with the initial purchase to do this, not necessarily in the long run though), you can use your normal drives.

I wouldn't buy Compaq (it certainly has proprietary parts). Look at Dell or HP. Go with the drives available with the system if your SCSI drives are a year or more old... technology is changing too fast.
