    Compatibility mode paging – Win95

    My hard drives are all using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. The help states that “Windows was unable to identify a real-mode driver or memory-resident program loaded in your Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file. You will see another message thatlists the name of the driver or program causing the problem.” There are no other messages that appear that would help me locate which driver or program. Autoexec.bat is @e:\NORTON AntiVirus\NAVDX.EXE /Startup
    LH C:\CDROM\MSCDEX.EXE /D:NCI000 /Vand config.sys is DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
    LASTDRIVE=Z
    DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\HIT-IDE.SYS /D:NCI000. Any ideas?

      Is this a new install of the OS or has this always been the case?

      Check the following:

      1.Goto:start>settings>controlpanels>system
      2.select the performance tab
      3.select the file system button
      4.select the troubleshooting tab

      make sure no boxes are checked

      THis problem is mostly caused by Windows not being able to detect the hard disk controller, and thus cannot load a protected mode driver. One first thing I would try would be to first get rid of the config.sys/autoexec.bat statements for the CD-ROM.THese should be loaded automatically in WIndows. REM them out.

      Next, THis CD driver you have loaded is curious: Do you have a seperate CD-ROM controller card? If so, it may have another IDE controller that is conflicting with your one on-board. Disable the IDE interface, or find a way to include the CD-ROM drive on one IDE controller.

      Did this system ever work or is this a new install?Rename autoexec.bat and config.sys,reboot.otherwise,boot to windows ad run regedit.backup the registry,then do a search on “noide” without the quotation marks.reboot check device manager for busmastering ad performance runing optimally.
      could be a virus,If results are the same,delete hd controller ad reboot,win will redetect controller.

      I,m back to edit my post.If regedit finds a NOIDE strig,DELETE and reboot.that often is all that is needed to detect controller correctly.

      There is also a possiblity that you have gottena virus. Make sure that you update your virus dat files and run a scan from a boot disk.
