    Computer (CPU?) Running Very Slow.

    Locked

    by rgjr61 ·

    Dear Friends:

HELP!! I’ll try to make this short… Grandson spilled water on my Toshiba Satellite A135, Intel DUO @ 1733 MHz,Vista Home Basic SP2, 2M RAM.

It shorted out the CMOS battery, yet after running several diagnostics, only ???reported’ error is the ???Real Time Clock???. No problem, I can set the clock when needed and I’ve not yet worked up the will (courage) to open the thing and replace battery!

Problem is the computer (CPU(s)?) speed SLOOOOW. Just to get the task bar to raise from hiding takes close to two seconds, opening Firefox, 35 SECONDS! Even the mouse is slow and music, system sounds, video…forget it. Now the curious part, that was three weeks ago and after using the slow computer, and I mean Pentium, 256k, Windows 3.11 slow, it slowly returned to normal speed, pun intended. FYI ??? Task Manager and Resource Monitor do not show any excessive CPU usage, ???100% Maximum Frequency,??? although the ???refresh??? rate on both is slow also.

Because I am a glutton for punishment I guess, I downloaded and burned to CD Version 4 of ???MemTestx86??? using ???Image Burn???. Immediately after burning the CD, the computer RETURNED to Slow Motion! I ram MemTestx86 and after 3 full passes, no errors and clock speed was reported @1.73GHz.

Any advice, suggestions or just comment will be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Robert G.

But if it had any Liquid split through it you are on borrowed Time so make a Backup now and start looking for another NB.

Thanks for writing “Smeg”. The exact circumstances lead me to hope for better. I am in the market for a new Laptop regardless. So far today, all seems well again. Speakers are a little “crackly” but otherwise the performance is faster than I am, so I’m happy.

      Checking Memory

Have you noticed an overflow in memory usage taking place in your HDD? Try checking your PC’s memory status. Perhaps too many unecessary apps or programs.
Another thing i should ask, did your computer started showing slow processing *before or *after water got spilled on it?… that’s definitely something you might want to consider before troubleshooting the issue.
One more thing, how much RAM do you have on your computer? Windows Vista Home Premium requires a minimum of 512 MB, and an additional 1GB for everything else. As a suggestion, try checking home much RAM you have on your PC and how much of it are you actively using. The less RAM you have on a PC, the slower your computer will run. 4GB of RAM should be a good decent amount to have, their very cheap nowadays as well. Instead of wasting money on a new laptop, perhaps upgrading your current PC to save money. But of coarse you will want to identify the main source of the issue before anything.

Thank for writing joshua… It started after the water, it comes and goes, though it is mostly slow all the time now. I’ve diagnosed a bad driver on the motherboard, and will just buy a new laptop. I’m running my max. of 2GB RAM and “MemTest” shows it’s all good. I have Vista Home “Basic” SP2, all updates, etc. Just an example of what NOT to do..i.e. wash your laptop in the dishwasher..LOL. Thanks for your input. Cheers, Robert

Hi joshua… Thanks for asking. It all started after the water incident and I’ve tracked it down to a faulty driver on the main board. So a new laptop is in my future. To answer your inquiry, I run Vista Home BASIC SP2, 2 GB Ram and a HD only 30% full. Sometimes it works OK, others it’s slower than a Tandy 1000 on downers. I’ve priced replacement MB’s and a new laptop (the one in question is six years old) seems the best approach. Thanks again for the input. Cheers, Robert
