Computer Freeze

By james_rocha ·
I just bought a Systemax 1.0Ghz AMD Athlon Computer system through AS SEEN ON TV PC and it freezes up quite a bit. It doesn't do it during any particular program but does seem to do it most often while I am on the internet. When it freezes I can't do anything except hit reset. Any suggestion to fix or even find problem?

Computer Freeze

You might check out your ram. I had this same problem for months, actually from the time I got the computer. I tried everything and nothing worked. My computer would run for days with no problems and then it would freeze, it didnt matter if I was onthe internet or running a program. Come to find out my ram was bad. Since I replaced the ram the computer hasnt had a single freeze or any other problems at all.
Hope this helps.

I found out the problem was duplicate drivers.

Hey James, I can actually answer this question for you most difinitively. The suggestions you have received about ram are absolutely correct. I also have an athlon 1ghz system, and I was receiving the same freezing, in addition to the odd GPF warning. It turned out that the ram installed by the manufacturer was extremely incompatible with the system. Replace your ram, and the problem should evaporate. Also, never ever buy a system from a company that you do not see regularly. No one else has said it, but if you MUST buy a pre-built, stick with Dell or Gateway. Sorry, but I have been working with PC's for over a decade, and only Dell and Gateway have managed to work time into their device construction phases to TEST component compatibilty. Obviously, systemax just took stuff that was buzzword capable, and threw it together. I would return it, and go to the big guys, or build your own. It is not that hard.

It isn't the RAM. It was duplicate drivers.

I don't know how many memory chips you have installed on your motherboard but if you have more than one chip you might try removing one at a time and see if the hang ups stop. If you only have one chip perhaps you might have to purchase another memory
chip to see if another chip will fix your problem. I have seen your problem on many different machines and memory has been the problem about 98% of the time.
