computer keeps rebooting

By hargoj ·
I have an IBM NET VISTA MODEL 2276, CONFIG ID#Cf20495 i'm trying to fix for a friend. I've formatted the hd-clean. It has all the original components it came with. I try to load win2k or winxp, but the computer just keeps rebooting. If I load it with just DOS, the machine runs fine and everything, no rebooting. Soon as I start loading any win, it starts rebooting. Sometimes it will go through the install, and get to screen right before it flashes the desktop and reboots. Tried hotswapping parts, cpu, ram, hd. Nothing works.

I had that problem before and what I did was go to the bios and reset it back to the default setting and it solved the problem.

the bios default settings don't work at all. I have to turn off API, and I think its ACPM to make windows install.

What about switching video cards??? Or is that integrated?? Video card drivers are notorious for causing problems. You said that it ran fine in dos, so it seems you may have answered your own question in that Dos does not load the same amount of drivers as WinOS.Especially video.

I have had this exact same problem and it ended up being the RAM. You could have two bad ram modules. Try borrowing a friends or picking up a new module. This problem had me stumped for a long time, but trust me, it's your RAM. Don't waste any more of your time. Get new RAM.

Run a low level format and then run fdisk or partition magic..also i have used AefDISK..These all do the same thing, but i find partition magic to be the best...then re install the operating system, XP..

I have come accross this 2 times already, once with Win2k and the other WinXP.
Both are custom built machines.
Both were bad mother boards.
