Some Recommendations

by willcomp In reply to Computer Security help AD ...

You may get a number of opinions on this. Of course mine are the best :-)

For AV, AVG and Avast are both very good and are free for home use.

There is no anti-spyware program which offers anywhere near full protection from adware/spyware. The best that I've run across so far is Malware Bytes Anti-Malware.

The free version will detect and remove most of the worst nasties, but it does not have real time protection.

If you have a NAT router, I recommend that you not install a third party firewall.

Gotta agree with willcomp

I have been using Avast which is free for home use, you only have to register it.
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and do a regular scan.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

When I need a small footprint AV product

by OH Smeg In reply to Computer Security help AD ...

I use Avira it has a very small footprint doesn't consume a lot of Resources and just works a treat.

It's particularly good in systems not used often where things like AVG can cause the Boot Up times to increase when it attempts to automatically update it's AV Definitions.

You can download th Free Home Version from here

First do this

by winthrop.polk In reply to When I need a small footp ...

Make sure the Norton system monitoring is disabled, in my opinion. This is a background running process that uses tons of resources to continuously check, monitor and report things like communication attempts. It really does very little in my opinion and isn't worth the wasted resources; better to just set it to scan once a day while you are asleep. This will solve your problem. Plus, as I recall, it constantly pops up to let you know about communication attempts for everything, including google.

Best spyware program outthere is Adaware. Always fixs those minor slowdown errors resulting from malicious software. Onceagain, continous monitoring should be disabled.
