Config.sys Devices

By vicram ·
I am having problems in booting to win98-I am getting a message that the config.Sys device is corrupted. Could you advise how to reset the config.sys.

I am not booting to win98 either on safe mode - only to the c prompt

Config.sys Devices

Easy up Guys lets not get all techie and go mad keep it simple to start with, config.sys is very easy manage. It can be accessed a few ways. 1. when you pc is booting up, as soon as you see starting Windows press F8 and choose boot to DOS mode. thentype edit config.sys.
2. within win98 type start run sysedit.
3. within win98 type start run msconfig.

Option 1 is best as it will tell you where the error is. eg. error in config.sys @ line 2.
then when you edit config.sys you know which line is wrong. Also don't worry config.sys is usually only a few lines long so shouldn't be very confusing. Finaly an example of a resonable and simple config.sys.

Device=c:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:off
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems
DOS=high,umb
files=70
buffers=20,0
country=044,437 c:\windows\country.sys

when finished make sure to save (ALT FS) and exit (Alt FX). and restart.
unless your playing games in DOS you shouldn't need anything else. This will also improve Windows performance. For help on any of the DOS commands type command name followed by /? i.e. edit /? <enter>. Let me know if you need more help.
