There are several of these laptops crashing without any usefull hint why.
They are installed with Windows (95 and 98SE)+ Novell Client 3.10 and are using a madge pcmcia smart 16/4 Ringnode Mk2 to connect to the lan.

Does this problem sound familiar to anyone?

Is it perhaps related to the memory issues Dell has with some of their laptops? We have a number of CPiAs but haven’t had a problem so far.

This may sound odd, but we use several of that model in our organization, and the most frequent cause of odd behaviour is from the screws in the bottom of the case being loose.

Check the bios revision… There are some buggy ones around.. If there is a more recent one try that and if you are using the most recent try regressing by one.

With any Win95/98 Crash, you always need to look at what software is running at the time, especially any virus software. If you do have virus software, try disabling it and see if that helps. I also agree with the first guy, Dell has reported thatcertain laptop models shipped with defective RAM, I’d check that first, then take a look at software. Also, when it crashes, does it give any error messages or does it just lock up, mouse and all?

The company where i work for has a policy for the installed software, at this moment i can’t tell if the anti-virus software causes the problem.

I work on CPiA’s day in and day out and the goofy little crash problems like this are almost always (90%) of the time related to one of the following loose items: loose screws on the bottom of the case, loose devices in the add-on bays (battery, floppy, CD, etc..), or, believe it or not, a loose CPU card (yes card-they use a CPU card). To tighten the first two-do the obvious. For the CPU, apply steady, moderate pressure to the upper right of the keyboard-from about the number 7 to the ” and theletter H to the Backspace-this is the Dell recomended procedure, crazy as it sounds). The other 10% (which are usually total lock-ups in IE or Outlook) are related to a known bug with the ATI Rage video drivers. There are a few fixes for this-here’sthe MS page:
      http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q175/1/48.ASP?LNG=ENG&SA=ALLKB&FR=0
We’ve found that a combination of the first and second fixes usually solve the problem.
