    Dell PC w/Conexant Modem Hang

    Locked

    by lrclifford ·

I received a Dell Dimension XPS T700r w/latest BIOS & a “Conexant V.90/56K Telephoney Modem for Windows”. Software is Win 98 2nd Ed , IE 5, MS Outlook Exp 5.

Often have problem connecting to ISP. I hear handshaking. Password no problem. Will disconnect & redial alternate number & usually connect. Sometimes it will return to the primary number. Other times no problems.

The modem often appears to “sleep”, especially during pause on Internet to read long page. When I request the next page, there can be a pause of up to one minute. During this time the dial up indicator on the taskbar is black indicating no transmission. After a while it will deliver the next page. All is OK if I keep requesting pages rapidly. I have not been disconnected during a download.

I also received a Dell Dimension XPS R350 w/a 3COM modem. The software is Windows 98 First Edition, IE 4, & MS Outlook Express.

Never had a problem w/2nd system. Both use same phone line eliminating that.

The speed for both is 46K – 48K

That Conexant modem is a piece of junk. It’s extremely touchy and if it works you’re amazingly lucky. There are updated drivers on Dell’s site, but I don’t know how well they’ll fly for you. You can certainly give them a shot though! The driver name you will want (depending on which OS you’re running) is ATH04_NT.EXE, or ATH04_98.EXE. Give it a shot.

This quite possibly is a problem with how the connection options are setup. I’ve used cheap, so called “pieces of junk”, modems many times. If it’ll dial and connect, it’ll transmit. Go to Control Panel/Internet Explorer Options/Connections. The best option to use is “Dial whenever a net. connection is not present”. That way it’ll dial-up when necessary without prompting you. Then click the “LAN Settings” button. Make sure that “Automatically detect settings” is NOT checked and that “Use a Proxy Server” is NOT checked. These can cause IE to look all over the place for a server before defaulting back to the DUN or dial-up.
Another thing to do is after dialing up and connecting, Start/Run “winipcfg”. Up at the top where it says DNS Servers, write that number down then click the button to the right of the number for more IP addresses and write them down. Then open Start/Programs/Accessories/
Communications/Dial-up Networking. Right click on your Dial-up entry and click Properties. Then “Server Types

      Blasted work limit!
      (continued)
Then “Server Types” tab, at the bottom, click on TCP/IP settings. Then select “Specify name server addresses” and enter the number in the Primary and Secondary DNS entries. This will give theDial-up a route to follow instead of searching each time it needs to look up an address.
      Hope that helps your connection.

      Misconfigured modem.

In DUN, right click on your Worlnet connection, Click on Properties. Configure -> Connection -> Advanced.

      set flow control to software.
remove error control and force MNP5 using ats48=128 in extra settings.

If thatdoes not work, remove everything but TCP/IP from the bindings on the Dial-Up adapter in the Network control panel. With AT&T Worldnet’s Helpdesk, verify the configuration of the TCP/IP stack that you have bound to Dial-Up Adapter.

Finally, try forcing v.34 on the modem by using at+ms=v34 in the extra settings. The important thing here is not actual connection speed, but connection throughput.

jesalyer is right all so try adding 3 commas
to the end of the ph#
some times the modem will hang because
of trying to answer before it hears the responding computer so it is setting there waiting for the other computer to respond to the 2nd set of hand shake tones win the first is still being transmitted by the server
