Disabling Windows 95 passwords

By dmcoxe ·
I have a Windows95 PC that was passworded by original owner, and password has been lost. Any attempt to change hardware settings requires password. Can I get around this by disabling the Password Caching using Windows Policy Editor tool? If not is there a workaround short of re-installing Windows 95?

I think you are refering to the bios password. Open you cabinet and remove the battery then after a few minutes put it back. All the bios settings including the passwords will be reset. You will then need to configure it again with some help if you need it from you hardware engineer.

1) Delete all *.pwl in C:\window\*pwl

2) you may change at

start-> setting -> control panel -> passwords

Passwords--> change windows password

Depending on where the passwords are, if win95 del *.pwl. If it is BIOS there is a dip switch that will reset the CMOS password. You have to set the switch, turn on the computer, turn it off and set the switch back.
