    Display corrupted

    Locked

    by achobbies ·

Problem began with gray shaded horizontal lines throughout display. It has now gotten
to the point where I cannot start Windows 98 without going into safe or step by step mode.
Display settings have changed from 256 colors
    to 16 and area from 600 x 800 to 480 x 640.
I have not detected a virus, but have gone to
MS-DOS mode and entered the command SCANPM C:/CLEAN/ALL with no change noted. Problem began shortly after downloading new version of Real Juke and associated Real items. I am
using McAfee Antivirus, but have had problems
    downloading current Dat.files.

It sounds like you may need to upgrade your video card driver. It may have gotten corrupted or may be set to standard vga. Find out what card you have and go to the manufacturers site to download the newest version for your card.

Try updating the video drivers thru Start-Settings-Control Panel-double click on the Display Icon, when screen comes up click on update driver button. You will also need to download the updated version of Direct X drivers ,which could be causing a problem.
Run scan disk from Windows and see if it brings up any file errors.
Download the latest version of the engine first and then download the dat files.

Is your monitor a Sony. Sony’s have been known to have what is called deadlines (1 to 3 of them) on the screen. They are most visible with a white backgroud. I have had an instance where a monitor would let a computer go into normal mode, but only let the resolution be 640×480 at any color depth. The issue here sounds like a bad memory region on the Video card most likely. The Sony monitor issue, if it applies to you, could be unrelated. If the corruption is always in the same place from boot to boot. then your looking at a bad video card, unfortunately. I hope I’m wrong, but its worth a test.

      Check for problems:
      1. Go into Windows Explorer and on the left side, click on “Downloaded Program Files”. Here, you will be able to see the status of your downloaded program files, and find out if any of them are corrupted. Go to the microsoft Knowledge Base <http://support.microsoft.com/support/default.asp?SD=SO&FR=0> to check on how to fix them if any are corrupted or damaged.
      2. Obviously, uninstall Real-everything and start over.
      3. Go to Start|Run and enter MSCONFIG. Click on the ADVANCED box, and see if VGA 640x480x16 is checked – if so, uncheck it.
      4. Do what the others above have recommended, like reinstalling your video driver, but try my suggestions first.
I do not believe that this is a virus – the above suggestion relating to an Active X problem is another possible place to look.

You mean the display settings are at this setting when your in safe mode? They should be. What happens when you start normaly? Do you get any picture at all? If not try a dif monitor. Unless there was a virus attached to your DL there is no reason drivers would be affected by what you installed….but anythings possible with Ssuper Duper Microsoft Products. ;p

      OK, here’s my 2c:

Boot Win98 into safe mode, right-click on the Desktop, choose “Properties” and “Adapter” or so.

Choose “Advanced” and click on “Change”, this will allow you to install the drivers of your display adapter.

Try to reboot into “Normal” mode and then change your screen resolution/colors.

If not possible then change your display adapter, check your monitor and cables.

      Good Luck…

You most likely have corrupt video drivers. Use the instructions given in previous response to try uninstalling/reinstalling your video driver. If that doesnt work, swap monitors with a friend to make sure it isn’t monitor. Lastly, consider swappingvideo cards with a friend(drivers also).

FIRST GO INTO RUN>MSCONFIG AND TURN OFF ANY AND ALL “REAL” ACCESSORIES THAT RUN AT STARTUP. ALSO REMOVE THEM FROM THE STARTUP FOLDER IN YOUR START MENU. THEY WILL OPEN FINE WHEN YOU NEED THEM YOU DON’T NEED THEM AT STARTUP. THEN REINSTALL DISPLAY DRIVER BY REMOVING YOUR DISPLAY ADAPTER IN DEVICE MANAGER AND REBOOT AND TURN GRAPHICS ACCELERATION DOWN A NOTCH OR TWO LIKE STATED IN ONE OF THE OTHER RESPONSES. I HAD ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS WITH REALPLAER STUFF UNTIL I TOOK IT OUT OF MY STARTUP.
