Ok here is a background I am a cable modem tech for local cable company. I deal with win9x all day. Here is the problem that I am 3 other techs can’t resolve. Sometimes after installing a NIC in a win9x machine i can get a DHCP address or set it static, can ping the dns servers, the gateway any numeric IP address but NO host names such as http://www.yahoo.com…. so in result it seems the machine is online but isn’t. I have tried everthing i can think of reninstalled network stack, reinstalled winsock.dll, wsock32.dll i am completely lost the only resolution i can find is FORMAT and reload PLEASE help me.. if I had more points to offer I would… PLEase help. for example

    ping 24.0.126.33
    reply from 24.0.126.33: bytes=32 … < dns servers ping http://www.yahoo.com
    unkown host

    please help

If you run winipcfg after installing the NIC, what does it show? Does it show the proper IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS addresses?

It sounds like you tried everything but, just in case you missed something. Here are the steps I would take.

look at the DNS suffix search order and the DNS service search order. Enable DHCP for WINS resolution.

If it still dows not work remove TCP/IP reboot reinstall TCP/IP

I have done that both with the suffix search order and DHCP for WINS resolution.. I’ve tried it static and half static (where i only enter in the dns servers, suffix, and gateway) also I have rebuilt the stack too.

Hmmmm – OK – may sound a little flakey or simplistic, but have you checked to see if application gateways, NAT, ICS, etc are installed?
I keep forgetting on my network to disable my Avirt SOHO internet sharing gateway, and get exactly the results you describe (Hosts files may have the same effect!)
Hope this helps, now that you have eliminated so many other things !

this could be as simple as that you have the correct install but the dns server you are using has a problem reaching the internet root dns servers.

from the dns server can you resolve names?

Modify the hosts file (windows\system32\etc) by adding the dns in it.

      Hope it helps
