Sounds like you’ve got a lot going on and maybe not enough RAM to do it.

You may have a bad CMOS battery, but that usually just goes and doesn’t slow.

What OS are you using? Other specs,i.e. RAM, processor type and speed etc. would be helpful.

      hi,

First sign of a cmos battery failure is the clock will not keep correct time.

Clock will change time every boot up.

Change cmos battery now and your problems will probably go away.

When doing disk defrag on a problem drive do so in SAFE MODE.

      That should solve that problem.

I would also check for spyware, it sounds like you have to many processes running at the desktop. Since the clock is correct after a boot, I would not suspect the CMOS battery. Download SpyBot’s Search and Destroy at http://www.download.com and make sure to update it before you run it. If that doesn’t fix the time problem, try shutting off programs in msconfig until you find the one that is not allowing your clock to update properly.

Your cmos battery is probably not the culprit here as you make no mention of losing other cmos settings and you mention your computer is locking up. My guess is that your Mobo is failing. Or atleast your Real Time Clock on the board is going

Not being able to defrag your c: drive can be a completely separate issue. Defrag needs total control of your c: drive for it to defrag successfully. Each time a program runs i.e a screen saver, defrag will restart from the beginning. Do what the other guy said and defrag in dos mode

this is known issue with certain motherboards. try disabling all power management stuff, both in Control Panel and in BIOS. make sure you are set to the correct time zone (i am just covering all the bases). or experiment with disabling startup items to see if one of those is the culprit(Start/Run/msconfig then pick Startup tab if that doesn’t work, look for a BIOS update for your motherboard.

First things first – do you have anti virus software installed on you PC, and is it up to date? Using the internet with out one is like bungee jumping with out the rope. 🙂

I have seen similar system/mouse freezes with faulty CDROM drives….. (yes, seriously)

We have had problems with one manufacturer/speed only – the Mitsubishi Diamond Data 48x cdrom drives (over 50 at last count). Other speed drives from the same manufacturer are fine.

They have displayed various symptoms, including system freezes, sometimes the trays pop out and in for no reason, and even a couple of hard drive corruptions. All have been fixed by replacing the CDROM!

It may be worth disconnecting your CDROM drive and trying it, see if it helps.

If you have a 48x Diamond Data CDROM I would put money on it being the cause.

Having said that, it is also worth doing the points mentioned above, especially checking for spyware (I use Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware) and doing a scandisk and defrag under SAFE mode.

I would also recommend using a firewall such as the one built into WinXP, or for older Windows versions, try Zone Alarm (www.zonealarm.com)

You should also state upfront what version of Windows you have, and the general spec’s of your computer, so the people trying to help can be more specific with advice.

      Hope this helps,

      Stu

Is it overclocked? also some software that tries to set it to some other time zone ( naviscope etc).
Hard to say about your problem at this stage. It could even be faulty motherboard with broken tracks or a loose PCI card ( ISA has thicker strips) . Try reinstalling windows. if the problem i am trying to solve takes more than 30 minutes i save my files and resinstall and I am pleased from the results till now.

This was an problem caused by McAfee virus scan. The issue is fixed with the 4160 scanning engine.

You were very short explaining your problem. (is this a recent PC, with W98 ou W2000 ou XP). Normally, a lithium CR2032 battery must have 3 Volts. Remove the battery and ask around for a voltmeter: buy a new one when voltage goes below 3 Volts.
A low battery cause a loss of time reference from boot to boot, but also the loss of hard disk configuration and boot sequence preferences, it seems it is not the case. I have seen defective clock chips with little or annoying time shifts. In that case, there is not other solution than to discard the motherboard. I hope that you have a recent one, and not an Olivetti M24 with a clock ending up on dec 31, 1988!

To succed with the defragmentation, you need tho have a clean bootup and no blocking processes of processes using periodically the hard disk. A first solution is to stop the processes from the processlist accessable after a single CTRL-ALT-DEL.
The second way the perform a Defrag without interruption is to start up the Windows in SAFE MODE (pressing F8 during the bootup sequence and selecting SAFE MODE inthe list.

Go to http://www.antivirus.com and run a free online scan. Any hardware that is bad can also cause your mouse to stop and start.
