DO I NEED A NEW MOTHERBOARD?

By pcguru09 ·
I'M REPAIRING A HP PAVILION a6300f THE OWNER HAS HAD IT FOR ABOUT 2-3 YEARS AND HAS HAD TO CHANGE THE MOTHERBOARD 3 TIMES THAT SOUND A LITTLE FUNNY TO ME BUT YOU CAN NEVER TELL, IS THIS SOMETHING THAT IS NORMAL? WHAT THE PC IS DOING IS I TURN IT ON AND IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WANTS TO BOOT UP BUT THE ONLY THINGS THAT WORK ARE THE FANS, THE POWER LIGHT FRONT AND BACK, NO MONITOR AND NO HD ACTIVITY MEANING NO AMBER LIGHT COMING ON OR FLICKING COULD THIS BE ANOTHER BAD MB OR MAYBE THE POWER SUPPLY THIS TIME. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ON DIFFERENT POST MOST SAY THE MB IS A CHEAP MODEL OH BY THE WAY IT'S A FOXCOMM MB ANY SUGGESTION?

Yep. Don't cheap out on the PSU. If the power is very dirty, you may benefit from a UPS with automatic voltage regulation if it fluctuates quite a bit.

Motherboard Replacement

Without a digital voltmeter to test the power supply it's really hard to make an accurate diagnosis. We know that one 12v rail in the PSU is working because the fans work. If the MB is not being powerd up you will have the problem you describe. If all powers are present then the sure bet is a bad motherboard. Inspect the board for burn marks and or swollen capacitors. Sometimes these are a clue as to the condition of the motherboard. A bad CPU is another possibilty but not likely.
The MB in brand name computers is the cheapest crap they can possibly buy, so if it is in fact the MB it's no real surprise.
If you determine that the problem is the MB i would choose a different brand. I have great luck with Asus boards. Install a new power supply and purchase a Back-up Power Supply. Power surges are very hard on all computer components.
