Does anyone still use Windows 98 or earlier?

By jfuller05 ·
I'm just curious if anyone uses Windows 2000/9x series, or even earlier. My wife's papaw uses Win98 (he has a lot of computers), has a laptop running XP, but his using 98 really shocked me. So, I thought I would ask the TR world about knowing anyone using earlier than XP operating systems. Of course, also include if you know anyone using earlier versions of Linux/and or Mac OS.

I have just removed one 98 Original System

That was 9 years old for a client.

However I still supply DOS and support a swag of CAM Machines which run on a DOS platform. These are less than 5 years old and will be in place for at least the next 10 years or so and probably much longer as it takes the best part of 6 months to remove the existing machines and replace them then get the Plant up and running again.

I think that the smallest unit here has a 40 Foot bed so they are not easily portable and needless to say extremely expensive.

There are a multitude of other Specific Devices out there which use a lot of what are now considered as Obsolete Software. For instance one program used by Earthmover's runs on NT4 and nothing newer. As it saves the people who use it a lot of money and the company who developed it currently has no plans to port it to something newer in the way of an OS it too will be around for a very long time to come.

I can appreciate that

The guy a couple doors down from me retrofits machinery like that.

A horizontal boring mill, for instance, that took two eight-ton forklifts working in tandem to maneuver.

Goes from NC to CAM. Has shelves and shelves of motherboards, and other foreign stuff.

And, I still have my first valid CD of W95.

Well actually stuff earlier than that. Though since I started using PC's I don't think I've thrown any software out and I've actually bought quite a bit of the really strange stuff when I've seen it in shops selling second hand stuff.

I've got SWMBO so well trained that if she sees anything different she buys it for me. I might not use it much but then again it doesn't take up much room till you move. :_|

But there are some very interesting bits of machinery out there and they are fun to play with.
