Use free/cheap smart solutions. Make sure you're using your solutions to their fullest, such as using the feauture of your AntiVirus to remotely install and manage virus updates. The knowledge of IT employees and their attitude towards learning new solutions is key. I'm sure everyone has seen the wrong type of employee who spends way too much time trying to force a fix for the wrong solution.

Free or cheap solutions that aren't used often enough -
From MS:
SUS Server - manage updates for free
Office Resouce Kit
MSIA- check software installed on network
Action Pack (for MS Partners only) - super cheap licenses
MSDE - almost full version of MS SQL Server
From others: GFI Languard Scanner - free DL, and cheap to buy
SpyAnytime PCSpy - CHEAP monitoring on employees
911 Network Disk/CD Builder
VNC and add-ons - better know this one
MHTML - Use this instead of PDF. It's faster, free, can be edited by Office programs. It's just HTML, but w/ all files all in one file (easier for emailing and working w/).
